cv91915 Posted May 29, 2017 Author Posted May 29, 2017 Today's gem: I was going to try to use Discovery Deals for 5% back on an iPad at W****t.com, so I just logged into my Discovery account and clicked through to the merchant's web site. When I tried to check out at the merchant I selected from Discovery Deals my charge was flagged by Discovery as fraudulent and declined. That's amazing. (they've read your posts on here about wally world shopping) It's now been almost 20 minutes since I replied to their text message attempting to confirm the transaction as legitimate, and their system still hasn't responded. I paid with a different card rather than grow old waiting for them to allow me to spend < $800 on my $52,000 in available credit at a merchant where I told them I'd be shopping. Out of morbid curiosity I logged into my Discovery account, now almost 25 minutes after I replied to Discovery's text message and indicated that my purchase attempt was legitimate. They have now also flagged two other recent transactions, both of which are in the 5% categories for which I'm registered, and all but ~$2 of these purchases have been returned to Home Depot and credited back to my Discovery card. I can see a flag if you never buy expensive items at WM, and are now shipping it to an address 2000 miles from your billing address. Especially because WM is a typical location scammers try to utilize. Just another reason not to shop at WM! Mudland Manor was both the billing and shipping address. Well then it is official...Discover just hates you. I think in their internal "Words, Phrases and Other Stuff that annoys me" thread, your name is listed as the first post Quote
cv91915 Posted June 21, 2017 Author Posted June 21, 2017 (edited) I assume you kept a copy of the chat? If so they will credit...although as we have said numerous times, it shouldn't need a call for them to get it correct. I just found that in my secure messages. I'm going to reply and ask for an adjustment, but G O O D L O R D. I just went back through my Discovery spending for 2017 (it didn't take long). This total miss on Discovery's part represents a failure of 33% of my 5% category transactions for the year, and the specific transaction that they f'd up represents 83% of my 5% category spending for the year. The only people who still believe that Discovery reliably and correctly pays rewards are those who never check. This card is a pathetic joke. After reviewing the June statement it appears that I received the credit for the 4% that Discovery shorted me for the warehouse club spending on my May statement (the Costco.com spending which I confirmed with them in advance would pay 5%, but which I had to contact them afterward to have credited properly). It's impossible to tell how they calculated the rest of the rewards for this statement cycle, though, since they show a negative value in the "Everywhere Else" (1%) spending category. There is almost zero 1% spending of any kind this year, and there has been exactly $0 in returns on the small handful of 1% transactions. If they were tracking YTD rewards correctly, it would be impossible to have any 1% spending subtracted from my June rewards. I have not tried (and will not try) to reconcile this against last year's spending. Edited June 21, 2017 by cv91915 Quote
Kentster Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 I guess I should consider myself lucky. I use my Discover card heavily and have had zero issues. Quote

Kentster Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 Perhaps I have an older, discontinued product but the miles can be converted to Amazon points at rate of 2%. Quote
cv91915 Posted June 22, 2017 Author Posted June 22, 2017 Perhaps I have an older, discontinued product but the miles can be converted to Amazon points at rate of 2%. For anyone with good credit, 2% is the minimum to accept on a flat-rate cashback card, and I wouldn't accept restrictions on the types of redemptions available to max out the value unless the redemption value was stellar, which that is not. You really should take a close look at your spending patterns and analyze the other options out here. You're leaving a lot of money on the table. mendelssohn Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 Perhaps I have an older, discontinued product but the miles can be converted to Amazon points at rate of 2%. 1% https://www.amazon.com/gp/shopwithpoints/marketing.html/?place=camp&pr=swpdfsmi2&inc=swpdfs&plattr=DSMP You missed out on a ton of rewards putting all that spending through a 1.5% cash back card. With a Chase Freedom Unlimited that would have been enough points for about 9 international business class round trip tickets. Quote
ukaserex Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 wow. 3/4 of a million in spend over the course of a year... Mine was about 15k. lol. Currently, the only place I would use Discover is at Lowe's or Home Depot - and I don't spend a lot of money in those stores. You reach a certain age, and you just don't need "stuff" as much as you used to. I've already got a garage and a shed , and an attic full of stuff. I should try to sell it, but I might need it someday! Quote

Allow me to clarify, this is a Discover Escape card which pays 2 miles for each dollar spent which is effectively 2% when used at Amazon. I have a myriad of cash back cards and use them all vigorously. I'm married to my work and have little time to travel unfortunately... Quote

I just went through all of the 2Q 5% spending on my Chase Freedom card, and what a stark contrast to the sloppy Discovery card. Chase scores a 100% for the entire quarter for grocery and drugstore purchases. Chase even managed to correctly classify my Instacart purchase as groceries, and they paid 5%. Discovery on the other hand couldn't figure out that Costco.com was a warehouse club purchase. Quote

cv91915 Posted July 26, 2017 Author Posted July 26, 2017 (edited) I just picked up a few groceries at Vons. The rocket surgeon in line in front of me was buying a jumbo Kit-Kat. The cashier told him they were on sale: buy two / get one free. The guy grabbed two more. The guy then took out a thick stack of payment cards held together with a rubber band from his pocket, and retrieved a Discovery card from the middle of the stack. At this point he started telling the cashier how he had left his debit card at home, and he had left the house to buy his daughter a puppy. Then there was some mumbling about feeling bad because he told the guy who was selling the puppy he'd be right over to pay. When he got the total he flashed his Discovery card and asked for $120 cash back. First swipe failed. Asked for $100 back. Second swipe failed. He then started explaining to me how he had called them in advance and they told him he could get up to $120 back. "At once?" I asked him. He looked at his shoes, paused, and finally admitted that the 100% US BASED CUSTOMER SERVICE rep said he might have to go through the line a few times to get the whole $120. cv91915 Posted October 7, 2017 Author Posted October 7, 2017 Days before I left the US I set a travel alert on Discovery's web site. Today I tried to log into my account from my hotel. Earlier this year I had the same thing happen when trying to log in to my Discovery account from Europe -- from every country where I told Discovery I would be, within the dates I told them I'd be there.
