I just do not think there is any rhyme or reason to Barclays CLI. I just logged into the DW account to pay the bill and she got a 2300 CLI, now 5500. This card is PIF every statement but is used very heavy. I was pleasently supprised with the CLI!

Here is my Priceline card experience with BK CH7 showing discharged May 2010 and zero inquiries showing on TU and strong self-employed income:

  1. Opened account 12/30/2012 online and was given (from memory) around $1,800 online approval, hard pull. TU08 FICO at 685 on 1/2.
  2. Immediately called back door and asked for reconsideration and was given $4,500.
  3. First statement cut 1/19/13 with $3,500 charges and $3,250 payments over the first 20 days.
  4. Bumped 12/30 inquiry on 2/12.
  5. Requested CLI 2/12 by phone to back door asked for something huge, countered with $10K, hard pull. TU08 FICO at 689 on 2/4.
  6. Second statement 2/19 $10,400 charges and $9,100 payments
  7. Third statement 3/19 with $20,000 charges and $31,000 payments showing credit balance $10,000.
  8. Bumped 2/12 inquiry on 4/7.
  9. Fourth statement 4/19 with $36,000 charges and $25,000 payments showing slight credit balance.
  10. Requested CLI 4/23 by phone to back door asked for something huge, countered with $20K, hard pull, told this would be it for a while until more history. TU08 FICO at 696 on 4/3.
  11. Fifth statement 5/19 with $12,000 charges and $12,000 payments zero balance.
  12. Sixth statement 6/19 with $16,000 charges and $16,000 payments slight credit balance.
  13. Bumped 4/23 inquiry on 6/21.
  14. Requested CLI 7/16 by phone to back door asked for something huge, DENIED, and told need to stop at $20K until I have more history, hard pull. TU08 FICO at 690 on 7/2.
  15. Seventh statement 7/19 with $20,000 charges and $7,000 payments (made mistake) $13K balance reports!
  16. Eighth statement 8/19 with $3,000 charges and $13,000 payments and $3K balance reports.
  17. Bumped 7/16 inquiry on 9/3.
  18. Ninth statement 9/19 with $18,000 charges and $16,000 payments and $4K balance reports.
  19. Tenth statement 10/19 with $7,000 charges and $10,000 payments and slight balance reports.

I'm thinking of trying again for CLI to back door in early November, my TU08 FICO is now at 699 on 10/3, hoping to break 700 in November.

Absolutely IMPRESSIVE!!! :good: :good:

Amex is now coding Gift Card purchases as Cash Advances!!!

After doing many Gift Card purchases in the past, I picked up on the big crumbs 2.25% reinstatement special and purchased $5K a few days ago. Today, my Barclay's 2% rebate card showed a 5% cash advance fee! I called Barclay's and they said the purchase was coded as a cash advance by American Express. They instructed me to call Amex at (866) 268-0582 and ask them to recode the purchase as a purchase instead of a cash advance to be consistent with how they have coded it in the past. Barclay's also stated that if Amex would not cooperate to call them back and they would assist further. I'm on the phone with Amex now and have escalated to a supervisor as the first line CSR was not helpful.

Amex said they could not recode and to instead dispute the change with Barclay's. Barclay's said they could not dispute the charge. Instead Barclay's provided a one time courtesy adjustment of the cash advance fee and promised no interest would accrue if I PIF as normal. I tried to get my cash advance limit set to $0, but they said that is not possible, and instead instructed me to set a pin to prohibit cash advances without the pin.

Also according to Barclay's the charge appears as "Amex Gift Card" with "Direct Marketing Direct Marketers not elsewhere" for the merchant category name, but the code for that category has changed by Amex from being a purchase to being a cash advance.

I then asked to speak to a supervisor again to double check, they said you have no way of knowing if a purchase will be a cash advance short of asking the merchant before buying and them telling you honestly. This seems very broken!

My own data point. 2 Barclays card opened in Apr with starting limit 500 and 750. Got auto CLI to 1k2 and 2k respectively precisely on 6th statement cut. Been using heavily but pay everything off. In fact most of the time they have negative balance.

Thank you. Looks like another tip of the hat toward spending much more than 30% of your limit for six months for an auto CLI.

I typically run my card up to about $450 a month and have been paying it down to let the $150 report then PIF

maybe they just don't like me

Since this blog article failed to produce auto CLIs and I have read about people getting auto CLIs with high utilization and carrying balances, I decided to change my plan. I am not going to carry a balance, but I am going to use more of the CL and see if it produces an auto CLI. I didn't get there this month, but I am shooting for $1200-1300 next month. My statement closes tomorrow and my payment for this cycle cleared today.

Statement 1: July-I only had the card for a couple weeks and wanted to make sure it reported $0, so no charges.

Statement 2: August-PIF mid cycle at $402/27% & towards the end $377/25%. Statement balance $0.

Statement 3: September-PIF mid cycle at $436/29% & towards the end $255/17%. Statement balance $0.

Statement 4: October-PIF at $452/30%. Statement balance $0.

Statement 5: November-PIF $1079/72%. Statement balance $0.

Statement 6: December

Statement 7: January-I may let a balance report and immediately PIF.

  20. Eleventh statement 11/19 with $7,500 charges and $11,500 payments and $1K balance reports.

I'm thinking of trying again for CLI to back door in early November, my TU08 FICO is now at 699 on 10/3, hoping to break 700 in November.

I applied again today after the eleventh statement 11/19 using the backdoor number and asked for $80K to match my NFCU. My TU08 FICO was 702 in November, but I just paid my two car loans down to below 90% utilization, so I expect my score is now higher with that reporting.

They said it would be a hard pull and asked:

  • My income
  • Income source (self employed)
  • How long I've been self employed
  • Was my reported income representative of other years
  • How was that income broken down
  • Reason for the BK
  • If I pay my cards in full each month (yes except 0% BT at NFCU to be paid off at expiration)
  • Liquid assets I have.

They came back with a counter offer of $25K based upon the highest balance reporting on the NFCU card on the credit report is only $24K. They stated that they are looking to see the high balance run up and paid down. Would not say how long to wait to try again. I asked for an adverse action letter and they said it would only be a counter-offer letter.

I will have to do an $80K balance transfer with NFCU and pay it off right away the next time they offer a 0% BT and try again after it reports.

I was not keeping track of my balance this month, so I did not quite reach my spending goal. I put $1098/73% on the card this month. My statement closes in a few days, so we will see if I get an auto CLI or not. My TU 08 FICO still is not that great, but it has improved by 38 points since I opened this card. TU 08 at the time was 603 per Walmart, and TU 04 was 634 per NFCU credit pull the same month.

Statement 6: December-PIF $1224/82%. Statement balance $0.

Statement 7: January-PIF $1098/73%. Statement balance will be $0.

Statement 2: August-PIF mid cycle at $402/27% & towards the end $377/25%. Statement balance $0.

Statement 3: September-PIF mid cycle at $436/29% & towards the end $255/17%. Statement balance $0.

Statement 4: October-PIF at $452/30%. Statement balance $0.

Statement 5: November-PIF $1079/72%. Statement balance $0.

Statement 6: December-PIF $1224/82%. Statement balance $0.

Statement 7: January-PIF $1098/73%. Statement balance will be $0.

Well, no CLI. Although my credit has improved since I opened the card in June, I think the one remaining open collection may be part of the reason. I found out today that the remaining collection account is going to be deleted, so who knows if that will lead to an auto CLI. All I will have left are the closed student loan baddies and some late payments on a car loan from several years ago. Regardless, I'm going to keep using the card for the 2% categories since that is the best I currently have.

At least what I learned from this experiment, other than the fact that the blog article is BS, is that Barclay's is not predictable and there is no formula for an auto CLI.
