  1. When was their last ON TIME payment and what State are they in?? If your relative is beyond the statute of limitations for being sued then the letter should work. I don't believe I suggested the "handwriting" thing for letters to JDBs--it is reserved for CRAs (Experian etc.)
  2. Leave them-- you never know when you might want to re-open them PLUS the age of the "good" accounts is far more beneficial than any slight effect the low limits would have.
  3. The best comments any of us can make are at the ballot box.
  4. Current state of affairs Without a functioning CFPB, enforcement may fall to state attorneys general and private lawsuits. The Federal Trade Commission can bring cases but lacks the authority to conduct routine supervision. A future without a CFPB will leave consumers increasingly trapped, said Hayden, the Chicago attorney. “In five years, the resolution of consumer disputes is going to be worse, credit reports are going to be worse and it’s going to be harder for folks to fix them, guaranteed.”
  5. Unless the letter you received was sent certified mail or had an illegal demand in it or threat to sue or report I suggest you do NOT respond in any way. These scum scam CAs send out batch mailings on old accounts hoping to get some kind of reaction.
  6. WASHINGTON – Citing a court order, the Trump administration said on Jan. 9 it will fund the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau with $145 million, a reversal that ends an 11-month battle that pushed the consumer watchdog toward insolvency.
  7. I like them-- no problems quick response times and yes I pay off my accounts monthly.
  8. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/30/business/consumer-financial-protection-bureau-funding-trump-vought.html Judge rules funding for the CFPB must be restored. All is not lost YET!!!
  9. I worry more about loss of memory than loss of energy although I WOULD like the energy to forget I am nearing the century mark.

  12. No I am looking for the SOL date for being sued. Some States have a 3 year SOL
  13. Flyingifr gives good advice-- however---it may also be to your advantage to review the EXACT status of your account with Merrick. What KIND of account did you have with them? Credit Card?? if so what was the last statement you received-- ie did it show the account as closed?? If so ,what was the effective date of closure. When EXACTLY was your last ON TIME PAYMENT? ( and of course answer "Flying's" questions.)
  14. What may have worked in the past ie letters threatening FDCPA reporting is useless now as consumer protection agencies have been emasculated. Ignoring these bottom feeders is the best choice in these days of kidnapping every bit of data transmitted.
