my rewards are incomplete, they said my account is one of the few that has problems with the rewards.

i maxed my gas ($1500 x 5% = $75) this quarter and i put close to $8k x 1% = $80 in regular spending from january 12 to march 2 and all i got was $35.

now because of this incident i have to go back and check my rewards/statements all the way back to july2015.

what's my next course of action?

how do i get them make it right?

CFPB complaint?

The talking down of about discover not crediting rewards back correctly is frowned upon. ....discover rarely if ever credits mine correctly

Unfortunately Discover's methods for tracking rewards are subpar when compared to other issuers. I actually have created a spreadsheet for tracking my Discover deals purchase just to make sure I get what I am supposed to. That being said, I usually have gotten everything I was entitled to, and when I didn't a phone call fixed it. If you think you are missing rewards my advice is to go back and recalculate it and then call them. If you can prove you're missing rewards, they will credit them (at least they have done so in my experiences)

They could really stand to take a page from Chase's playbook where they show the rewards credited on each purchase.

Discover is using the same strategy that is used for mail in rebates. They simply choose not to pay rewards to a bunch of people, which means more $ for them and less $ for you. And it works (for them).

Some people will forget. Some people will be confused. Most people won't be sure exactly what they should be getting.

Some people will realize they've probably been shorted, but then they have to decide how much hassle to go through to check whether they got that 5% cashback from that $53.24 order from three months ago, and then figure out how to try to get it.

I found that if I send a secure message at least 40 days after purchase with name of merchant, order number, purchase date and amount, then they will pay it. In other words, if you demonstrate that you tracked your purchases yourself, then they'll pay it without further hassle (to them and you). But that's already way too much hassle, and I couldn't be sure even then if they'll pay, just that my experience is that they often didn't pay when they should, but then they would pay if I sent a message with enough info.

But it is definitely the case that Discover will delay, confuse, misinform and cheat you on rewards.

In the last credit crunch, Discover as a company did not perform financially as poorly as many other issuers. CNN wrote an article that this was partly because Discover was often the #2 choice of people using credit cards - so people were more likely to charge and default on their primary card, which was usually not Discover.

The moral: when you deal with Number 2, sometimes you get your hands dirty.

Having said that, my Discover Cashback rewards have always credited correctly - but I never max the category because I'm usually working on earning miles or HHonors points. So it's easier to track 2 or 3 purchases per quarter. I just keep the card since the TL is over 15 years old.

Maybe the problem is with heavy use?

I could not agree more that discover is #2....the rest is just details

No, I don't think that's the problem, speaking from my experience. I don't use it much, maybe a couple of times a month. Discover Deals might look good on paper (especially with double cashback), but the reality is that MOST of the time they do not pay the rewards. You have to jump through hoops to try to get them, so it's not really worth the hassle, and it's very obvious that they are making it a hassle on purpose.
