Hypothetical: Lets say you're a good friend of Bob. Bob was such a good friend that he let you be an authorized user on his super-exclusive American Express Black/Diamond/Gold/Palladium/Kryptonite card with a $1,000,000 limit.

Bob was walking outside his house and got mauled by a wild elephant. He's rushed to the hospital but his prognosis is grave. To sooth your pain about Bob who may soon no longer be with us, you buy fancy cars, clothes, jewelery and hundreds of thousands of dollars of cash advances on his card. The next day Bob passes on. The medical bills wipe out Bob's estate.

Could American Express still go after you?

First thing I thought of when I read this thread was this:

Credit Boards Con Artist

You are the rudest, most unkind, worthless piece of crap poster, we've had around in a long long time. How dare you try to re-title a thread or mis-characterize a forum member. I could just as easily give you an extremely unflattering title just underneath your screen name for the entire board to see. I would expect an apology to be forthcoming to our membership base.

That's polite of you.

This article linked in the first post and the one I linked do share a common theme. Thanks a bunch for the compliments.

And your overdue apology?

Oh yeah. Amex is special. Amex counts both the member and AUs responsible for the AU's debt.

I wonder how legally enforceable that is.

(Contracts are not always 100% enforceable despite language when challenged in a court of law, just 'sayin.)

When I've added AUs by telephone, the CSR almost always emphasized that the AU is agreeing to pay their own charges, if I don't.

How is the AU agreeing, though? Through use of the card? Maybe there is something in the cardholder agreement, buy generally you (main cardholder) cannot bind a third party (AU) unless there is an agency relationship.

It's in the Cardmember agreement for AUs.

The AU can always decline, and ask to be removed.

BTW, all I asked of my AUs was that they pay their own charges.

Nothing you have said in re: to the OP of the thread you linked to has been anywhere near polite. I've already reminded you once, now Marv has. If we have to remind you again to keep to the TOS, your member status here will be gone.

I totally agree with you Marv. If someone said that about me...well those be fighting words! I hate when people are disrespectful to others.

I would just like to point out that General Forum has a few good ideas about what his "title" should be. We are creative and kind like that. Consider it our community service
