I went to the dentist today for a teeth cleaning. I don't go to the dentist very often because.........well, because he scares me.

Anyway, I went and got my teeth cleaned and got x-rays, etc, etc.....

While the hygienist is cleaning my teeth, the dr. comes in to review the x-rays and proceeds to tell me I have two cavities in one tooth. He goes on to say that they are getting to the point that if I let them go much longer, we'd be talking about an extraction or a root canal. I assured him we would NOT be talking about a root canal.

But, my question is, if I have not one, but two cavities in one single tooth........wouldn't I feel some sort of pain, or sensitivity to heat/cold, or some sort of symptom? I don't feel anything at all.

Is he just trying to milk my insurance? Or is he trying to kill me?

I made an appointment to have them filled on 4/24, but if he kills me, I might not post the results.

Not necessarily. If they don't get close to the root then you won't feel any additional pain. Get them fixed. Don't be like me and avoid the dentist for over 10 years. When I finally went back due to unbearable tooth pain, every tooth in my mouth needed something. I have so far had 4 root canals and 7 crowns and 1 extraction. I still have about 2 root canal/crowns and 6 fillings to go. There is a light at the end of this tunnel. It is worth being a little uncomfortable every 6 months with occasional fillings to avoid my issues!!! :blush2:

Cool. If it kills you and you post it will go down in history!

Seriously, the doc should have showed you where they are on the x-rays. Of course, if he's trying to pay the rent he might be using someone else's x-rays.

Meh. I didn't go for 17 years, and when I went back in, I didn't have any cavities or problems at all. I now go every 6 months, but have not had any cavities since returning to proper dental care - the only ones I've ever had, I had prior to turning 18. I did have a root canal when one of my fillings fell out. I never floss but do brush my teeth twice/day.

The difference in results is largely genetic and largely the result of the hand that your DNA dealt you; some people are gonna have problems with their teeth no matter how often they have a checkup, some people are gonna have no problems at all. I'm very fortunate that I fall into the latter category.

QSM: Yes, probably.

Yes it is genetic. Both my parents have bad teeth too. It doesn't matter how much I brush and floss, I'm still getting cavities. I do know tho that I have had multiple cavities in one tooth and didn't feel it. I was shown on the x-ray however

Can you tell us what happens? I have not been to the dentist in 5 years. I have never had a cavity although most people in my family have dental issues. If you survive, I might go.
