Great find. I was in the process of canceling my basic account when they offered the VIP package at $9.95/mo. It didn't say anything about unlimited pulls, so I went ahead and canceled anyway. I just signed back up (different email) for Premium.

Smart Credit - quick pop in their score?

So I'm new to all this. Reading and learning (trying). My goal is to improve the way I look to Barclay's, and I believe they do TU, so figured I'd give the current special on SmartCredit a shot. I signed up for their plan 4 days ago. They said my score was 788 (I assume this is a FAKO score, but it is what it is). I have pulled an "update" from them each of the past 4 days. Today, after I did, they showed my score at 802 - much to my surprise.

A few questions...

Is this normal - to see an incremental increase so quickly? I figured I wouldn't see any movement for a month. Perhaps it was just a coincidence (ie an inquiry or something would have rolled off today anyway, and my little tugs did nothing)? Or is this SmartCredit.com's way of encouraging me?

Does this 14 point increase in their FAKO score correspond to an equivalent increase in my actual score, or is it all illusory?

Thanks!

Oh, it gets better.

I had my wife sign up tonight, a few minutes ago. SmartCredit gave here a score of 821 (about which she gloated). OK, fine.

I went and checked mine again - this is at roughly 11 pm Pacific time. Now it's showing my score as 810 - up from 802 this morning.

While I'm happy to see an increase, this just seems too good to be true and I'm skeptical. Do their scores fluctuate wildly like this? Any explanation? I doubt the extra 8 points they threw me were a gift for getting my wife to sign up (or maybe they were...).

You will likely see a smaller FICO movement compared to FAKO (at least from my experience I see larger swings on FAKO). The best way to check is pull TU on MyFico and see your actual FICO then compare.

Looks like MyFICO is $14.95/month (10-day free trial, but if you don't cancel by day 10 it's a 3 month minimum so $44.85 commitment). Any better deals on that?

MyFico looks like it gets you Experian only - right? Or do they give you all 3?

My immediate focus is on Barclays, and IIRC they only pull TU (true? can anyone confirm this?).

TUP + SCP is like running 91 octane, it sure costs more but it can get you places much faster

"TUP" I'd guess is TransUnion Plus? Is TUP the only way to get your real TU number - is the TUP number your actual TU number, or their own TU-FAKO? Yikes, they get $39.95/month - 91 octane indeed - (7-day free trial) - any better deals?

As an aside - other than the small corporate logos and other branding, every one of these web sites looks identical - right down to the colors, buttons and icons. That's, um, kinda creepy...

Thanks!

Ah, one more question...

When I look at the details I pull up in SmartCredit, here's what they show in their little summary:

Creditors 29 Collections 0 Public Records 0 Total Inquiries 7 Accounts in good standing 29 icon-negative-alert.gif Total negative items 0 Total Items 36 Open: 16 Closed: 13 Auto: 1 Credit Cards: 24 Mortgages: 3 Other: 1

My question on this summary is that "total inquiries" item. I have probably applied for somewhere between 12-18 credit cards over the past 12 months (and we did a home refi 6 months ago). I did gang up some of those credit card apps on the same day(s), so it's possible that a few of those were merged -- but 7 still sounds low to me (if this value reflects all hard pulls over the past 12 months - could it just be the TU hard pulls?).

How accurate is that "Total inquiries" number" and what exactly does it mean? What's the time-frame they're counting? The reason I ask is because I'm planning another Barclay credit card app soon, and the primary concern I have there is that many people report get denied for Barclay cards due to "too many credit card applications in the past 12 months" (I know what to expect from Chase, Amex and Citi, but I've only been paying attention to Barclays for about 6 months). With just 7 visible to them, I should be fine. But I need to understand more about that number (and what parameters SCP is using to calculate it).

Any insight on this? Thanks!

Transunion Plus and SmartCredit Premium can be used for B* of TU only.

The scores provided are FAKOs.

Inquiries listed are from TU over the preceding 2 years. Your other inquiries probably hit EQ and EX.

Barclays pulls TU. Your best bet is to B* those TU inquiries off before applying.

Thanks, signed up the wife and I both for the $9.95 plan.

Trying to give *B a shot, I tried MPM previously but canceled after getting errors trying to update 75% of the time.

That's OK. I'm really only focused on Barclays right now. But that raises some related items...

Yes, given my short history (6 months) with Barclays, I'm sure that the overwhelming majority of all my inquiries hit EQ and EX. But I've only applied for two cards from Barclays - not sure where the other 5 TU pulls came from (SCP shows I have 7 inquiries).

But more to the point - OK, Barclays pulls TU. But they are not blind to all the other inquiries that have been made - are they?

The reason I ask is that I've read more than a few anecdotes from credit card churners who (like me) were fairly new to Barclays (and presumably had few TU inquiries) who also were turned down for a second or third Barclays credit card, and the reason given (by the Barclays rep) was "too many inquiries" - when pressed, the Barclays CSR informed the applicants that they had 10-12 other credit card applications over the past 12 months, which disqualified them. These guys did not apply for 12 Barclays cards - Barclays must be seeing pulls from somewhere else - so I assume that Barclays is seeing applications for other cards (Chase, Amex, Citi).

So, yeah, I'm doing my best to B* those TU inquiries. But I'm thinking that Barclays is going to check and see something else (other than what's on TU) when they run my application - won't they? Maybe I'm missing something here...(wouldn't be the first time).

Thanks again for the help - appreciated.

I would B* those inquiries but don't worry about being denied by Barclays they are great with recon. I was denied with a 747 TU called for recon approved at $2500 called at activation CLI to $4500.

Barclays does seem to be the odd player here - at least if the many reports are to be believed. I have always had success applying for cards. Only once or twice did I not get instant approval, a quick call to recon and moving a little credit around has always netted positive results. But there are a *lot* of recent reports of Barclays just saying no to people who have more than 8 or so credit card applications in the past 12 months - even if they have great credit, squeaky clean records, etc. Barclays just seems very easily spooked by seeing more than a few credit card apps.

I'm pulling updates on SCP every day in hopes of B*ing some, but am still struggling to understand exactly what they (Barclays) can/will see when *they* pull your credit. Wish I could see (or know) exactly what it is that they will see - but that doesn't seem to be possible(?).

No way to delete the old account or remove your SSN from it? Sorry, it's been a while.
