 What were the $300 in finance charges for then?

So he carried a balance a few months for quite a bit of spending. No big deal. But to get a CLD? That sucks.

 Even more confused now.

USAA isn't bad but, it's no NFCU when it comes to initial credit limits when comparing apples to apples. A decade ago USAA was extremely easy though for many. Things have changed a bit. I will also say this... If you use USAA for your mortgage, car loan and other financial products you will typically get whatever you want.

Yes, the deeper your overall relationship with USAA the more generous they are.

USAA has already been relegated to the sock drawer. I don't even want to use it sparingly. If they don't give me CLI soon, they can join my ChaMu cards.

If you don't show some use on there, they probably won't see any need to give you a CLI. But like you said, there are other cards with way better rewards!

I maxed out the credit limit initially and paid off immediately. Asked for CLI twice but was declined.

Other people here got higher limits than me despite similar derogs and scores.

On the other hand, Penfed approved me for 10K the same day I applied to USAA and bumped it to 50K shortly after I maxed and PIF.

I'm glad to hear others are having better luck with USAA but they have been stingy with me.

You not the only one they are stingy with. I have the same strategy as you, heavy monthly use but always pay off before finance charges. I had $58,000 in c.c charges last year and about $300 in finance charges but they decided to lower my limit to $3500 from $9000 during their (February 2013) yearly review. After calling them and having a hard pull they raised it to $7600 @15.9%. Called NFCU this month, and they have me $15k @8.99% on a Platinum Mastercard and a few days later got Visa Signature Flagship Rewards 10k @ 9.99. Ive had USAA since 2007 but never had an auto CLI from them. USAA is great for other stuff but like chugs102 says, their World Mastercard is going to the sock drawer.

 What were the $300 in finance charges for then?

Cash Advance fees from using convenience checks and a few foreign transaction fees.

NFCU initially approved me for 5K. They increased it to 10K in 2 months after I asked so I could take advantage of the 0% BT offer.

USAA approved me for 4K, so they were my second highest limit on a true revolving card I could use anywhere. Instant approval online 2 months after I had opened a slew of new accounts. I have checking, savings, renter's insurance, auto insurance, investment, and retirement account with them so no idea if that influenced their decision for approval.

No, USAA doesn't give big initial credit lines.

Tomorrow, my USAA credit card will be 6 months old. I applied for a bunch of cards during that time frame and USAA is one of my lower limits at 6K.

how is USAA with baddies?

Posted

My initial limit with Navy was much higher than my USAA produts. See below in my sig line. Pretty good considering what I still have on my reports.

that's great! what kind of baddies are they? good scores though?

USAA wouldn't give me the time of day when I had two 6.5+ y.o. COs showing (scores in the 680 range). I did several recons, up to including the president of the company but they wouldn't give me any of their unsecured products, even with a five dollar limit. My income was strong, and aside from those two admittedly serious (but quite old) blemishes I didn't have so much as a 30-day late anywhere else on my reports, and I had a decent mix of tradelines reporting (mortgage, installment, revolving).

Once my credit was pristine I looked at their rewards card offerings again and pretty much did a spit take. Now that I can choose from almost any card I want I would never chose one of their UNrewarding rewards cards.

If it wasn't for the inexpensive daily puller ($11.12/month for all three bureaus, at least for now) I would have closed my account/membership and moved on with my life a few months ago.

well either way...that's good for you. You fought and got to the point where you can apply anywhere and that's all that matters. You really have to fight to get out of the stress of not having credit. "pursuit of happiness" you do have to pursue it

I fought like hell for 18 months to get there. It was very much worth it.

It's priceless though. I've been fighting correctly about that long now. But the fight started 4 years ago for me with a lot of money lost. It's important to have good people around you

I agree completely. I could not have done this without the encouragement of my SO, who also added me as a joint owner to a couple of pretty ancient cards. Both helped tremendously!

I bet. I might be adding some nice AU's to my account too if all goes well. I have a current topic on it.

That's really cool of you.

If you have the stomach for it, adding them as joint account owners does even better things for their credit. Different issuers have different policies for who and how, if they allow it at all.

I've also noticed a number of comments on this forum that suggest that some issuers don't even report AUs... but I'm betting that you're more up to speed on that than I am.

Decent scores, last FICO for ex was 714. The baddies were a utility collection, ann taylor CC, verizon wireless, stuff like that. I've also been a full member of USAA since I was 19. That might have played a part.

They don't seem to want to touch anyone with collections. Do you have to call to get their daily 3 puller? That's a petty good deal and I haven't seen that offer on their site. Do you have to be a full member to get it? I guess im a full member, not sure but I am a US Army vet so who knows. I thought someone said you had to have their insurance to be considered a full member.

When I apped for a used car loan about 14 months ago with them, I turned it down. I couldn't believe that Cap 1 blank check was 3 whole points lower than what they offered, I was shocked, they are definitely not good for everything but I do like them. Im not really thrilled with their lack luster rewards card though. After I declined their auto loan they did keep sending me Amex pre approvals until I caved.

So far , I have come to love them , tough to get high limits,.

In time they have been quite nice to me and honestly anybody I have recommended.

True they love squeaky clean, as I jump started a friends credit /Au big lines I had her apply at usaa.

Needless to say she was approved for 10 k instantley in front of me.

Her eyes bulged out of her head and mine to be frank.

The other line she had on her own was a 500 rebuilder card I had her open at a local Cu.

After I got my eq report clean last summer I applied for usaa MasterCard as limited member (no military in family at all). Instant approval for $15k. Was my first 5 digit limit.

I'd cave in to for a 12k limite, haha.

Was that State Farm Visa easy to get? Did you have any of their products prior to applying?

I'm sure it plays a role if you have a relationship with them for a while. Those baddies aren't that bad. 714 would seem like your good to go.

Good for you guys. I need to clean the file up some more before I make a move with them.

I meant someone is going to add me on their file to help my scores out.

I'm not that up to date with it actually. I just want to make sure they post to my account. That's why I started that other thread on how to post AU's.
