I had a charge off from Amex in 2007. About $5000. Eventhough it wasn't on my cr I wanted to get back in their good graces(I applied many times and got the blacklist denial), so, I paid the $5000, waited 48 hours and was approved for a Platinum. I'll prob apply for a blue when my last baddie falls off in a few months.

As for the Amex blacklist I am told(by Amex) it works by rejecting folks that have an overdue balance, once that balance is $0 it's only then based off your credit report. I waited until it said my old balance was $0 and pulled the trigger right away to see if I'd really get approved. And I did!

Do you know if you have to PIF or can you settle for less to clear it in their systems?

Congrats u made the right decision to get back in with them.

Can you explain why that is? I don't have an Amex card but what am I missing that paying $5,000 to get one makes it worth it?

that is an expensive application.

Amex blacklist isn't forever. But congrats if you're happy.

how long?

I was >10 years post BK. Was able to pick up 5 D* cards.

So here's my thinking on the whole thing. I defaulted so much in 2008. A house, cars, credit cards. All I paid back was 9K out of 6 figures. Never filed bk. 5K went to Amex and am happy to be back in their graces among other banks. So in hindsight, 9K is nothing ..

What I learned from it all. Don't carry debt. Don't spend more than you have. watch everything

I went through a similar situation without a BK and I've been thinking of paying to get back in with Amex.

Did you have to payoff the balance in full or were you able to settle for less?

Amex blacklist is 10 years. If the OP charged off in 2007, he could've waited a few more months and kept his money.

But it's his money and his desire to please Amex.

Certainly not a decision most would make

The only thing that matters is that you're comfortable with your decision, and learned from the mistakes made prior to 2008.

Congrats on your Amex.

^^^ This! ^^^ Congratulations!

I don't know if I'd have made the same choice, but without a doubt Amex is the best credit card company I've ever worked with and the way they instantly let you back in when you paid the debt is the perfect example of that. When I had my financial problems Amex worked a flexible payment plan out with me and as a result was the only card I didn't default on.
