I applied for share savings only. They pulled EQ only (not Chex). I had 3 inquiries total on EQ (all new).

They denied membership based on "Number of Recent Inquiries on credit report" WTF does this have to do with a savings account?

My question is, should I call for recon now? Or just wait 2 weeks and re-apply with 0 inquiries?

If I wait there might be a couple of new accounts showing, and their new inq will spoil my pristine report. But they will have lost their excuse for denial.

But if I call for recon now and they deny, they are more likely to remember me in 2 weeks. Suggestions?

I had no luck on reconsideration, tried two times. I suggest wait a year and try again with zero inquiries on Equifax. I don't think bumping helps. I only had one sticky both reconsiderations and still denied.

Sounds like good advice from both of you, I will call them during business hours tomorrow.

But I just noticed something very interesting... in the "disclosure of information obtained from an outside source" box, below where they checked EQ and did not check Chex, there is some tiny print . It reads:

"Information was obtained from an outside source other than a consumer reporting agency. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you have the right to make a written request no later than 60 days after the receipt of this notice, for disclosure of the nature of this information."

I'm absolutely sure I have no banking skeletons in the closet so I can't imagine what this might be. But it looks like the "too many inquiries" reason may have just been a distraction.

Now I'm glad I applied even if the recon doesn't work. I think I just flushed out an unexpected cockroach.

Now that *IS* interesting.

So its Official. JFCU is a joke. Got denied membership for to many inq on eq. The joke is I had no inquiries. Called and the csr was talking in circles and couldn't answer my question how I got denied for inq with no inq. At first I asked for reason y i got denied and they told me inqs. What a joke for a CU.

how many times has a creditor pulled your EQ report in the past 13 months?

ARS?

I was guessing that might be it, except it's hard to believe anyone would pull ARS for a savings account. Why would they care?

I sent a letter requesting reconsideration and got the same response again:

Too many inquiries on EQ, plus "Information was obtained from an outside source other than a consumer reporting agency. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you have the right to make a written request no later then (sic) 60 days after receipt of this notice, for disclosure of the nature of this information."

So I sent a letter requesting disclosure of the nature of the information from an outside source but they are stonewalling. The response I got was a duplicate of the original denial but no disclosure.

I'm not 100% sure this is a violation of the FCRA, because I never actually applied for a credit product, only membership and share savings. But I am sure JFCU is not the sort of organization I want to do business with.

BTW, they also pulled CHEX at the time of application (and I do have inquiries showing on CHEX) but they are claiming the adverse action was not based on CHEX, only on EQ and the undisclosed "outside source".

only on EQ and the undisclosed "outside source".

well ARS sells its products as a means of fraud mitigation. too many apps from the same HOUSEHOLD (not just individual) is supposedly viewed as a fraud risk.

I guess I need to avoid the justice league.

So i got a copy of my chex report and had inq from JFCU. I have acouple accounts on chex so I think that might be why I got denied even tho they used the to many inq excuse. My question is, if this is actually the case, why would they not just tell me?

The only thing I remembered stand-out about JFCU was the Line of Credit they have. It reports as an installment loan, so it would help with credit mix and age rather than just adding another credit card.

All this for 0.25% interest? https://www.jfcu.org...sitRates.asp#cr

It's because of the LOC they offer. It has some very attractive features. :)

To follow up, I obtained my ARS report. JFCU did not contact them. JFCU's "outside source other than a consumer reporting agency" remains a mystery to me. Maybe someone else is tracking inquiries too.

To summarize: JFCU pulls EQ + CHEX + "an outside source other than a consumer reporting agency" for membership, but not ARS. They are not sensitive to CHEX inquiries. They have denied membership based (allegedly) on 0-3 EQ inquiries being "too many", but more likely based on an undisclosed 3rd source. Or possibly due to the relative positions of the Moon and planets.

At least one person (BW) has recently attained membership despite having 0 inquiries on EQ. So at least we know a negative number of inquiries is not required. :P

Are these denials for last 12 month inquiries, or are they going back the full 24 months on file to count the "too many inquiries?"

Are you guys all joining via the backdoor/sidedoor? If that is the case, may be just a case of them wanting to restrict membership again to their core clients. Sort of how Ft. Knox started basically rejecting credit card apps for whatever reason they wanted to if you were outside of their service area.

Which sidedoor/backdoor are you talking about?

Which sidedoor/backdoor are you talking about?

Justice Federal Credit Union (JFCU)

National Sheriffs' Association

That one.

Yes they may have blocked the sidedoor at least temporarily. I received Adverse Action/denied membership recently as well for "Cannot verify ID" which is the generic one they are using for sidedoor denials if they can't get you via the other popular one which is INQs. I had 0 INQs and 809/816 at the time of the application. I did not call back for recon though as I have read that it might result in an HP! I know, I know, if only there was a way to at least take care of those
