:o I am in the Dallas/Ft Worth Area... Channel 8 just had a segment on dept stores checking ID ... George would have a heart attack!

Has something changed that I don't know about? Last I knew it is against M/C Visa policy to check id's? Is Channel 8 behind the times or am I? Update please... I refuse to have any dept store babysit my cc's.

As far as I know, it's still against policy. I have noticed a trend, however, where people are believing it's perfectly acceptable. To the point of it's acceptability becoming almost urban legend-like.

Other will be along to cut-and-paste their, ummm... time-tested... responses shortly.

I gave up and am now showing ID everywhere. Just not worth the aggravation - and I got tired of educating illiterate cashiers. I lost this battle.

Checking ID is against their policies, but IMHO, it's not a big deal or something to make big issue out of. If you really don't want to show your ID, then send complaints to credit card processors first and then to MC/Visa/Amex/Discover. MC/Visa/Amex/Discover are practically bound by card processors. ;)

Immediately call the station and insist they redo the piece with corrected information, and immediately report any violating store to Visa/MC.

Never show ID for signed credit card purchases.

No ID required for signed credit card purchases. Merchants cannot require ID.

If a merchant tries to require ID, immediately call 1-800-VISA-911 to ensure they never do again.

VISA: 1-800-VISA-911

MasterCard: 1-800-300-3069

Also easily report merchant violations online at:

http://www.mastercard.com/us/personal/en/c...violations.html

Check the box that says "Merchant required ID"

Never show ID for signed credit card purchases.

No ID required for signed credit card purchases.

Make sure your community is 100% violation-free. :)

Of all the things to get upset over, showing an ID to verify that a card is yours is pretty low on the list of the world's transgressions.

We bought some furniture Sunday and paid by CC. Cashier wanted to see my ID and quickly compared the names. (Took all of 3 seconds).

As long as they didn't compare the signature, it's not a valid transaction. You should dispute.

I hate showing my ID but usually I do just to avoid the hassle, EXCEPT the other day at Walmart. She asked for my ID, I was irritated and running late already, but I went ahead and showed her, BUT, then she said I had to take it out of my wallet, and that's when I informed her of the policy she was violating. She said "oh, did you sign the back of the card? (as she flips it over), most people don't so I just get into the habit of asking."

I don't know why but it irritates me so bad, I know people say it' not a big deal, but I guess it's the principle.

Cashiers don't take it upon themselves to check ID, they are told to do it. Why get snippy with someone who is following the policy of their employer? If you feel the need to protest, ask for a manager (and please, step out of line and let other people check out).

When I inform cashiers of the policy they become very chilly, as if I'M doing something wrong.

I find it works best to not inform them of the policy. About half the time just saying "No" will fix the problem. If it doesn't then you tell them you're going to file a complaint with their corporate/management and their merchant bank. That gets another few. Sometimes if they won't fold, you just have to leave the product on the table and not complete the purchase.

Waste all of your own time you want.

I agree with not wanting to show ID, but I agree it's hardly the big hairy deal that some make it out to be.

Some actually do take it upon themselves. Also don't neglect the person that may want to know the address of that cool new car stereo you just bought. :yahoo:

Totally agree about not wasting other's time, though. That's just rude.

I am not a credit card thief therefore I don't show ID.

A credit card thief would say the same thing, but...

If they think I am a thief they should call the fuzz.

...I agree.

It is a big hairy deal. A decade ago ssn's got to be such a problem that the DMV here (and just about everywhere)

took them OFF the drivers licenses. Guess what...just about every financial institution now uses the new license

numbers as an independent form of identity verification.

No random clerk is gonna get my DL number. Sorry, ain't going to happen.

Frankly, I think you're advocating a crime.

I have NOTHING else to fight for (other than a cancer stick free USA)

+1

My drivers license is a PERMIT to drive a car/truck

It has nothing to with being a PERMIT to use my credit card

Feel free to PROVE the card is not mine with-out ID
