How did you go about getting the HSBC American Express? Do you orginally apply for an American Express and they deny you? How do you go about applying? What's the requirements? Recommended?

I tried that one yesterday, you just click on the APPLY button next to the card on the HSBC page. Requirements are apparently a bit more restrictive than a regular HSBC card because I tried and it came back a big fat NO and listed three reasons immediately why I got declined.

James, this is an HSBC card that runs on the AMEX network. Think of it as a card with the Visa/MC logo.

In other words, you do not apply for a "real" Amex and get this offered as an alternative. It has nothing to do with Amex except for the logo.

There is a thread, IIRC, from December. Seemed like they gave low limits...

First, you have to decide you want a card with an AMEX logo that will maybe give you a $1500 limit. Then you have to decide that you REALLY want to do business with HSBC. Aside from the fact that an affirmative answer on the first two suggests therapy is in order <G>), there is a link somewhere on the boards with a mini-master thread from sometime around November if I remember the dates corrctly.

If you really need a toy AMEX issued by someone other than AXP, though, the Dillards one looks nicer (GEMB issues that one).

I'm not a big fan of the co-branded AMEX cards. Go for the real McCoy :good: .......

I can hear the distant words of hege ringing in my ears...."Network cards are not co-branded cards".

well you get 5 bonus points. LFTM gets -10

Well I really wanted my own AMEX card again (since I can't get the real one...) so I bit.

I was approved for a $2500 limit...definitely not my best, but I will work on it.

Is it the HSBC Amex or HSBC Amex Rewards card? I've had the HSBC Amex for 11 months and it doesn't report to any CRA.

Maybe you'll get lucky as well and end up with a hidden tradeline.

I only thought they were offering the HSBC Amex on their website? However, they are so weird...one day you see the Amex listed on their site and the next it's not offered...just like the Discover...one day you see it and the next you dont :)

In all sincerity, I hope it works out for you. Down the road, if you want another AMEX card not issued by AMEX, three more options are the BOA Amex, Dillards Amex issued by GEMB, and one of the Citibank AMEX cards. A Citibank mastercard can be converted into either the Citibank Dividend Amex or the Citibank Diamond Preferred Amex.

Can't get Citi and BOA for another couple of years due to previous IIB...they will be on my list at that point.

For those looking to avoid Amex drama, I'd highly recommend the BOA Amex with accelerated rewards.

I WAS AMEXED...I can't see giving AMEX any more business be it AMEX direct or AMEX BofA

If you want a rewards Amex network card, go for the Fidelity Amex, 2%, No AF.

FIA no like hegemony.

FIA claims I have enough credit even though my limits are less the HHI.
