And see, I think that many of those "suicides" are misdiagnosed - those happy ladies just went to bed one night and were suffocated by silicone pillows.

Not suprising. These people probably have more problems than they think, and think a larger bust size will fix everything (make them more attractive, more popular, etc etc). Once the procedure's done and there's no "magic change" they probably become further distressed.

I was asked about my mental health at a recent consult with a plastic surgeon. I'm glad he asked. I'd hate to get implants for the wrong reasons. A good surgeon will ask, as they also want to make sure the patient is going to be satisfied. And not get them for the wrong reasons (ie. find new love, make current love stay/love you more, automatically give a person more self esteem). Implants will do none of those.

Why do I want them? Cause I'm tired of looking like a pre-pubescent teenager. If I stood against a white wall in all white, I'd blend right in.

OLD NEWS

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14395430/

Don't be so quick to make assumptions - I am sure some of the females undergoing breast reconstruction wouldn't agree with your assumptions....the article is pretty sexist, is is like saying men with small penises have a higher risk of suicide as well, if the only reason that i can see behind breast implant related suicides are woman that are not happy with their appearances even after surgery

Just another case of YMMV on what you read, here is another study - published by Aesthetic Surgery Journal, the peer-reviewed publication of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

Women's Self-Image and Sexual Satisfaction Increase After Cosmetic Surgery

Body image and sexual pleasure, including orgasm, enhanced after aesthetic makeovers

The Aesthetic Surgery Journal released new data from a study on the impact of aesthetic plastic surgery on body image and sexual satisfaction. Women who undergo common elective cosmetic surgery procedures not only feel better about their bodies, but also have higher degrees of satisfaction with their sex lives, including ability to orgasm. Women in the study who had undergone aesthetic procedures were more sexually satisfied, reported that their partners were more sexually satisfied, dressed to enhance their new figures, and were apt to try more and different sexual activities post-surgery. The greatest benefits were seen in women who had breast augmentation/breast lift and/or body contouring procedures.

Most surgeons are ethically bound to take some sort of medical/mental history...also it will proctect them in case of ligitation..long history of anti-depressants etc should be huge flag...all the best with your new additions!

I agree for some this may be the case. But, a true study would have to include interviews of implant recipients…why they got the implants in the first place, underlining emotional problems, preexisting suicidal tendencies, etc…

I don’t know how that can make any links unless they were interviewed prior to suicide, left behind suicide notes or interviewed friends and relatives as to why they committed suicide.

Anyone here know what type of study was done?

I know you are interviewed, but were these part of the study?

Interesting.

I like how you've generalized people in this manner. Thanks.

I have implants...and dont regret them at all. There is and should be some sort of psychological counseling or such required to do so.

Excellent. Yes, if men had penises on their foreheads for the world to see, there would be more balanoplastic surgeries...and the men's suicide rate would hike as well. Breasts are a focus of female sexuality...whether it be from within ourselves to believe this...or from someone who helps to exploit women through strip clubs and such.

Implants are not for everyone. BUT there ARE people who have them done and are happy with them.

Lisa, if you or anyone else interested in the procedure wants some info or has any questions, I'd be happy to share.

Four - I've been researching for months. My main problem is getting my stepmom to not be so darn negative about it. All she keeps saying is her mom had implants 20 yrs ago and they were nothing but problems. I keep telling her implants are not like they were 20 yrs ago. Now they're saline. You can only get silicone if you've had them before. How long have you had yours? Any problems? No Capsular contraction or rippling?

Is this something new? I know plenty of chicks with implants and the only thing they needed was the ability to pay for them. There was no psych counseling involved.

It really depends on the person.

I know women that are thrilled with theirs. I know women that hate theirs and wish they hadn't done it. None of them have commited suicide though.

An aquaintence of mine got HUGE implants. She has a very small frame. I was at a party a few years back and she came over and stood between me and another lady with huge boobs. She said something like: "I am as big a you guys now". A drunk at the party told her: "Theirs are natural, yours look fake and nasty".

I know two men that have broken up with her over those implants. Her ex boyfriends say she is obsessed with how bad they look. She realizes they look bad (really, really bad). She has the money to fix them, but I think she is too stubborn to do it. I saw her at a party a few weeks ago and she was slumping to minimize them (she used to have them in everyones face). Other women at the party have implants and they look good and I have never heard anyone say anything negative. They don't flaunt them though.

I do think the study is crock ....there are too many variables to make a direct link...and no mention of whether the people they studied showed pre-existing mental health issues - Scandinavia has always had a very high suicide rate, if the study was conducted there as opposed to say Brazil where procedures are common, results are going to be different...why are there not comparable studies on say rhinoplasties, major and minor face lifts or other common procedures, - BTW, how many CC's did you end up going with? I see nothing wrong in enchancing and improving yourself...beside it is a double standard society where you are judged for improving yourself where all the while the media is shoving the ideal body concept down your throat - personally I dislike the sight of Nichole Riche as she looks now, reminds me to eat

Perhaps some of you misunderstood. I have no problem with women improving their self esteem, no problem with breast implants, and no problem with people choosing to or choosing not to get them. But I stand by my statement that some of these people might have gotten them thinking they would turn their lives around, make them more popular, more loveable, etc. A doctor trained in plastic surgery might take a mental history and probe for the reasons behind the choice and attempt to qualify the patient mentally to get the procedure, but there's no sure way to catch everyone. I also agree that there's not a lot of in depth correlation or analysis on the study. I simply commented how I can see a correlation being possible. I'm sure there's people who receive liposuction and are still not happy in the end. Point being, sometimes people feel fixing physical "imperfections" (either real or perceived) is the solution, I think it's more like one step in the process.

Did the gal whose implants "look bad" get humongous ones or what?

In all my research I've learned that bigger is not always better. For myself I only want about 300 cc's. Nothing outrageous. Just want to be proportionate to my frame. A big B cup or small C cup is my goal.

Paying for it? Saving what I can now. Might try to finance the rest. Ideally I'd like to PIF though.

IMO...

The media is involved in how women view themselves. We hear about new exercises, new makeups, wearing the latest style in clothing, shown pictures of women with flawless bodies. All things to improve appearance. And it gets shoved down our throats daily.

Being a "small" gal, is also damaging in some ways. For my situation I, honestly, feel like a tomboy. Even in a dress. I've had padding fall out of bras. A water bra that popped once while out. I can't wear tank tops or things that scoop low, it all hangs off my shoulders. I got a new bathing suit this summer, thought it fit pretty good. Wore it on the boat one weekend, little did I know that I was flashing anyone sitting next to me. Stupid suit was gaping open. So I'm in a new suit and a t shirt to go swimming, while all my other girlfriends are happily wearing their bikinis. And that's omitting the incessant teasing I get from others.

I'm not picking on you. I am seriously concerned for your mental health.

If you want them, get em’. :cry2: My sister (20 years ago) and a life long friend (10 years ago) got them and both are happy and don’t regret it. They were both were A’s and got reasonably sized implants and both look great. I have seen both of their implants and they really got a nice job done and you really can’t tell by looking at them…most likely because they didn’t get huge implants. Just get some recommendations from some girls who had it done while choosing a doctor.

I have had mine for 3 years (the "twins turn 3 tomorrow, lol). I have had no problems...no contracture, no rippling. I went with a crease incision. I didnt have a crease before surgery, nor do I really have one now...but the scars are very faint and can hardly be seen.

I had the opportunity to be in a study for the silicone gel implants, but I chose not to...not because they were silicone, but because I was looking for a little bit bigger implant than was available for the study.

I was a flat 34a. I went with Mentor/round/525 cc's filled to 575 under the muscle. I had NO bruising whatsoever. I'm at a 34f now. Keep in mind that an f cup for a 34 band is smaller than an f cup for, say, a 38 band (f cup is the equivalent to DDD...just depends on the brand and where the bra was made)

I did not "pick" cc's beforehand...the surgeon had me compile pictures as describe what I was looking to accomplish. I did not take pics of playboy models and such in...but I took pics of before/afters of people who looked llike me in the before pic and had the results I wanted to achieve.

Recovery wasnt bad, though because I went with "unders" there is muscular soreness. I did go shopping the next day, albeit, I had lots of demorol, lol. There are accomodations to make, for comfort during sleep, etc., while you heal.

Doc dic not pic a specific size/cc until surgery. He used testers first to achieve size and cc# as well as to create symmetrical pockets.

And, Fallon, thank you for claryfying. The operative word that was left out of your initial post was "some".

They are HUGE. She is about 5'9 120-125 lbs. Very small frame. She is at least a DDD cup.

I have a small frame. Mine are big (bigger than hers) and I think they look crazy. I could not imagine getting implants that big at my size.

I think some implants look really nice. Hers look like two Yugos on a stick. :good:

I'm a large DD/small DDD and I cannot understand why anyone would want to get implants this large. Maybe it's cuz I'm short, I dunno.

But it KILLS my back. Seriously the other day in Target DD's shoe came off. I usually kneel to fix her clothes/put shoes on her, etc...but this time without thinking I bent over and put her shoe on. When I came back up, something in my lower back POPPED/CRACKED! I was in pain for about 24-36 hours. :good:

Remind me NEVER to do that again.
