I'm going to see if I have any better luck using my Discovery card in Canada than mendelssohn had in Japan.

My spouse and I are visiting Lake Louise and Banff for a long weekend in September.

Below are posts from an unrelated thread, which I'll update here going forward.

Discovery acceptance is 33% so far:

0/1 on land tours

1/2 for lodging

This was the kick in the pants that I needed to book a day tour I'd picked out earlier.

http://www.brewster.ca/canadian-rockies/destinations/columbia-icefield/activities/columbia-icefield-discovery/

Here is the payment page on the tour operator's Web site. I'm 0/1 with Discovery.

I checked the lodging options I've already booked. The Fairmont where we're staying for the first two nights takes Discovery, but the cabins in Banff National Park (second two nights) do not.

I'm 1/3 with Discovery on lodging and tours.

At least in Canada, you won't have a language barrier blocking you.

Just learn what a loony and a Toony are.

Btw, they don't have pennies anymore in Canada. Eveything is rounded off except I think if you pay on credit.

Did you try to run your Discover on the page with the Diners Club logo?

No. I'd be willing to try yours though.

Joking aside, Disco should work over the Diners Club network.

Didn't know that was a possibility.

We already know that Discover does not necessarily work properly on other payment networks (JCB and UnionPay), so you will have to test the acceptability on Diner's Club at some point. Make sure you look for general acceptance at various places.

Cool. My co-worker just got back from Lake Louise/Banff a week ago. She liked it a lot. Just watch out for bears if you go hiking. They aren't like Yogi and Boo Boo. Carry bear spray and learn to use it.

Yes, Canada doesn't have pennies or dollar bills anymore. Card purchases and bank statements are still denominated to the cent, but cash purchases will be rounded. The currency is of a polymer. Very durable. You can accidentally run the bills through the washing machine, and they'll probably be ok.

They never had $1 bills or at least not in the last 30 years.

They have:

Nickel, Dime, Quarter, Loony, ($1 Coin) Toony ($2 Coin)

$5 Bill, $10, $20, $50, $100.

There's a Diners Club logo on the back of your Discover card

I have a few old one dollar bills. I'm saving them as a collectible. About four years ago I was in Montreal. I used a Royal Bank ATM, and to my surprise it gave me a bunch of $2 bills (also no longer being made). I saved some of those but used a couple of them at a Starbucks. The cashier was confused and had the manager look at them first. They accepted them. I laughed, thinking the cashier thought I was passing counterfeit $2 bills. I don't think any counterfeiter would bother trying to counter the $2 bill.

Discover bought the Diners Club network to give Discover cards better acceptance overseas. So they now place a Diners Club logo on the back of Discover cards to let people know that it should work.

We'll see. As I posted earlier, it doesn't work well on JCB or UnionPay.

The reports that I've read at FT are that Discover works fine on JCB and UnionPay if you don't have a chipped card. If you have a chipped Disco, all bets are off.

Even without a chip, it doesn't always work on UnionPay.

I had very poor luck with my Discover in Japan, and Amex acceptance was much better. There were plenty of places that didn't accept JCB or Discover, but accepted Amex.

Reward bonus categories do not always get processed correctly on other networks with Discover either. I had restaurant purchases code as merchandise and only got 1%.

I've never seen a $1 Canadian Bill.

I remember the $2 Bills, but the loonies were always the $1 currency for Me.

The toonies came out in 1996. I was there the day they came out and I got one. I was an salamander and used mine. They had some defects with the original coins and they reproduced them.

Too bad I don't have any of the originals. Would've been worth something

They stopped printing $1 bills in 1989. It hasn't been that long.

1989 is a long time ago. I was very young then.

They also weren't in circulation from what I remember in the early 90's. I just remember the loony

That's a long time in dollar bill life. Small denomination notes have shorter life spans

They also stopped circulation probably around that time as well.

I'm in favor of getting rid of the $1 US Bill
