Assuming it has been plugged in long enough to charge before the power went out, the car could be used once, just no way to recharge it at home for another trip. An electric car could be charged from a backup generator like any other household device. Or if it still has some charge, take it to a place that has electricity. People into green enough to have a full electric car are also likely to have solar panels at home.

First, electric cars are currently only for 10%ers, and I don't mean the bottom 10. E-Cars are for rich people and they are priced accordingly. Anyone who buys an E-car as their only mode of transportation has worms in their brain.

Second, 70% of the population couldn't survive 3 days out in the woods without having a store to buy food or supplies from. Electric cars are the very bottom of the list of things that people take for granted. The top of the list? Food, water, toilette paper, and a place deposit these 3 items once they are done "using them".

Third. Many electric car owners are having solar paneling installed to charge their vehicle off grid. If they can afford an Ecar, they can probably afford some panels too, which in some ways puts them in a better situation then other people in a state of emergency.

not to mention that when the power goes out gas pumps don't work...so I'd rather be able to use my generator to charge a reliable electric car than wait for the gas station to get power.

Electric cars should come with a hat or T-shirt with the car's name on it. Then when you're forced to walk or take the bus, you can still wear the hat/shirt so that everyone knows you have an electric car. Which is the real reason people buy one in the first place.

I used to think the biggest dicks were Prius owners. Then I had a conversation with a Volt owner. Boy did you hit the nail on the head.

I was actually just having this conversation with someone today. They're on hour 36 without power...but they can still get around!

Yeah, but if you have even a gallon or two of gas in your car, you can get to someplace that does have power...

can't do the same with an electric car that has 10% charge...
