Just had to post this. I originally posted some details in the SL forum

Early last year, I found out that I was gonna be garnished. For the first time, I pulled my reports, and found out just what a hole I was in. I also bought my FICOs: 452!

Prior to my SL going bad, I never had care when it came to credit; I knew it was bad, and I was fully content with paying larger-than-normal deposits for basic services and mostly doing the ostrich. I also found out that I couldn't open an account because of Chex.

I found Creditboards from the Chex site around March 2006. I read literally non-stop for weeks. I learned firm but ethical ways to clean up my report. I learned to negotiate, to bypass CAs, and work directly with OCs. My first victory was with TWC/CMI. It took about 9 months from the beginning to completion of the PFD with OC.

The past year read like a credit thriller:

***I was hit with a $5k claim from a state-owned hospital. With what I learned, and advice from Centex, Whychat and Pryan, I was able to prove (to the state AG, no less) that the hospital forgot to charge my insurance company. Legally, the hospital COULD have sued, but I did not back down, and I was able to use the the threat of public goodwill to my advantage.

***Was able to beat NCO three times (token stuff; I do admit to working with OCs. Presently, I am pursuing them for PP).

***I successfully worked on the OTHER side of repair, developing advantageous relationships with some of the best CUs around (Thanks Hege!)

***Finally qualified for a home loan.

I also learned about rehab versus other options. I just completed the program, and I checked my score today.

I checked last in July prior to going for a house. I had a mid-score of 629 (with the defaulted student loan on all three).

Today, with the bad TLs deleted per rehab agreement, I jumped to a mid score of 692. That's a 60+ -pt jump in two months, and 240-pt jump in 17 months.

I cannot say enough about how important CB has been to me. I am grateful for all the advice and support. I appreciate not being coddled; the honesty lit a fire under me. I won't even try to name all those who have helped me; there are way to many of you.

To the newbies (I still consider myself one, BTW): keep plugging away, and do not give up! the best thing about getting stuff fixed is the ability to be a resource to friends and family.

Thanks CB!

I am set to call the Dept of Education this week to get what my payments will be after rehabilitation. Which I just completed last week. I hope to get a similar bump...

How long did it take for the Dept of Ed to report the change in the credit reports?

I refused to wait up to "90 days". As soon as I got the letter, I disputed them off.

No... I did not dispute the ED loans.

When they went into default, they were listed on my reports under the state loan guarantor. I got into the rehab program, and they deleted the bad stuff THEY listed after rehab was complete.

From what I understand, getting ED loans off one's reports is next to impossible.

Thanks, K. Couldn't have done it without friends like you, giving pointers and advice.

This is a day late and a dollar short, but congratulations on all this progress! You already know you're my inspiration (see, KatyG is right on the money with her choice of friends!). I'm so excited about your progress, and hopefully I'll have results like yours when my credit grows up. :)

Gosh... thanks people. You all are too kind.

I still get chills when I first saw my reports with all the bad stuff gone. Getting the student loan stuff off was something I figured couldn't do, and even though it wasn't my worst TL, i considered that my biggest win.

Just goes to show anything is possible if you are patient, obstinate and willing to listen -- even when you do not hear what it is you want to hear. This is also why I am big on being proactive and possessing an outside-the-box type mentality when it comes to goodwill.

Again, thanks for the kind wishes. Everything good financially that is happening to me I owe to my CB family.
