I recently had an auto-CLI on my Chase United MileagePlus Visa and figured that I would experiment with mu Freedom to see if I could also get an auto-CLI on that card.

Since Chase is terrible with CLIs, this seems like a good way to get something when you aren't combining limits or applying for new cards.

Chase United MileagePlus Visa:

Opened in Dec 2014

Starting limit $5K

A little more than $4K utilization got me a CLI to $6.5K.

Chase Freedom Visa:

Opened in Feb 2014

Starting limit $4.5K

About $3.9K utilization got me a CLI to $5.5K.

These cards have always been PIF FWIW.

My theory is that utilization above 80% can help get a small auto-CLI.

I am closing my Chase Marriott next month and am hoping they'll combine the limit on my Freedom.

They will.

This is about how to get auto-CLIs though. I'm closing my United card in the next couple months and combining limits.

My wife had a similar experience.

Chase Freedom opened 3/2010 @ $5000

High Balance $4725 (94.5% utilization) - sometime around 1/2014

Auto CLI around 12/2014 to $6500

They won't if you close it.

You have to move the limit first.

Was high utilization just the highest you took it to? Or highest that you let report actually?

Did you carry that balance at all?

How long AFTER you had that high utilization did you receive a CLI?

konrad, I assume your question was for mendel.

For my data point below:

- highest daily utilization

- but did let a balance report of 70%-80%

- never revolved (PIF by due date)

- took 11 months to get the auto-CLI

- card had little usage in between, was using it again at time of CLI (but not at those high levels)

The highest I took it to. Both cards reported $0.

No balances carried.

About a week after my statement dates I noticed the CLIs.

I'll try that in a week or so. I've had the Freedom since Sept 2014. I'll max it out and see what happens

I was ok with the $4.5K for a while. But then PenFed took my $5K and made it $20K. And Disco has gone from $3K to $7K.

Can you move business credit limits to personal on Chase?

I'll slam my Marriott card over the next few months and PIF. I have a 5k limit, so I'll push right up against it and pif.

I love the feel of that card.

Ok. This is good information. Maybe this is evidence of a temporary shift in Chase behaviors (or could be quite random). But this is a good data point.

I have a rather large charge coming ($10,000 or more) coming up. I was going to throw it on a 0% card. However, if I throw it on a Chase card and let it report, and it could get a CLI, I'd consider doing this big time. (Just need to transfer the balance to my other card, but not sure how that works 100%).

Doubtful.

I know you can't move personal to business cuz I just tried.

I believe there's a recent thread on myfico where people were saying they were able to do this. I only mention it because I know Chase can make people think things aren't possible (so not doubting you here).

BTW, how much time should I put between Chase apps?

I don't think there's solid science to say how soon or how many. They seen to be willing to give more with a spotless credit history and a strong history with Chase.

I have 3 open cards right now that were opened in Feb, Jul and Dec last year.

Edit: uber, read that last PM I sent you.

I didn't let the balance report either time.

You might try it without letting the balance report.

Yeah, we were not trying for a CLI at the time -- this result was a happy accident.

We had maxed the card out for a large expense, and floated the balance in the grace period (PIF before due date).

I agree that letting the balance report is probably not necessary.

It will be interesting to see if this is repeatable, and at what interval.

Here's my plan if anyone wants to GP this with me.

I have 3 Chase cards now:

CSP at $12K

United at $6.5K

Freedom at $5.5K

I have just under $6K on the United card right now (to finish the $25K spend for the 10K bonus). I'm done using that card, and the statement will close mid-June. I'm going to wait until the statement closes in July with no activity and move the entire limit to the CSP.

In July, I'm also going to move $500 from the Freedom to the CSP leaving me with:

CSP $19K

Freedom $5K

At the 4 month mark, I'm going to try to repeat the process with my Freedom and run it up above $4K.

If I'm successful, I'll move all but $5K to the CSP.

If this is repeatable, I'm thinking it should be possible in the 4-6 month range.

Anyone want to GP this with me?

I did $10,000 or so at around October 2014, and I didn't let the balance report, but it did turn out to be my "highest credit" which was reported. My problem could be that I have the MasterCard version of the Mileageplus, and I know Chase is not supporting those versions as much. I did think this could be a factor, but at the same time, it may mean nothing.

However, as much knowledge and respect we have of the Chase internal score, that may only be factored into new applications and not CLI's. Perhaps my failure to let balances report has hurt me. I don't know. Chase may be looking at what is reported instead of what actually goes on, in regards to CLI's.

But I take notice of your CLI's because I have been watching the internet pretty closely and I see a lot of Chase trends that are different then the usual. And that's why I think the CLI's mentioned here could be part of a new trend from Chase also.

I really don't want any more cards. And I think Chase will introduce a new card within the next 12-18 months. Whether it will be good is anyone's guess. But I am holding out for now. I'd like to wait for better offerings from Chase, but at the same time, I'd like higher limits from Chase. I haven't pursued Chase aggressively for a few reasons. But one important reason is because I have or believe I have, figured out Chase's internal training of employees, which is, "be proud! You work for JP Morgan Chase! We are elite!" Blah blah blah. I believe that's where the arrogance comes from. That's perhaps another topic. Long story short, Chase cares, very often, more about what you are doing at other banks than what you are doing with them. That's a weird factor to consider. It is a question of ,"who is Chase competing with more at the moment".

Anyone? Uber said he was going to give it a shot as well.

I think we should test this with utilization just above 80% first. It's up to you whether or not you let it report. I'm going to PIF before the statement cuts.

If you are successful, start trying again at the 4 months mark and hopefully we can figure out not only if this is repeatable, but at what interval. 4-6 months would probably be the time frame for a repeat.

If you have more than 1 Chase CC, it might be worth moving some of the limit to another card and repeating the process on the lower limit card. That's the approach I'm going to take.

I'm game.

I only have 7k on my CSP since I moved most to my Freedom.

statement just cut so I will max it out with some VGCs and PIF before the statement.

I'm in. Lemme go for a bike ride - I have a few questions when I get back.

In the meantime, does Chase have a minimum limit?

I can let 80+% report. I'm clean across the board, so I'm not worried about FICO essploshunz.
