I do appreciate the ability to edit as a courtesy, I ask that you please leave us with this privelage, If you notice the people that do the most editing of their post are either new or dont read or both.

I'm not new but the only time I edit a post is when I discover a grammatical or spelling error to the point the post doesn't make sense.

Please leave us the option so we can avoid embarrasing posts.

Hello Mods,

I too need the edit function. I do preview my messages before submiting but I occasionally still find errors later doh.gif

I also PM people if they put thier name, account #,DL #, SS #, address, website or email with their real name, ect & tell them to please edit it out since you can never be too careful, especially on a credit board.

Maybe you could you add a usergroup with no edit or delete rights for the abusers?

Thanks

Do you guys not have the ability to edit your posts? Am I missing something here? I can edit mine...or are you trying to get a delete post option? Just curious.

Spoon, read the sticky at the top of the Credit Forum about deleted posts. The mods are ticked off at the sheer volume of them, and have made it clear that if the trend continues, it's likely we'll lose the edit function.

Can't blame 'em. Although the occasional "Delete This" thread is fun, having five a week is pretty stupid.

Oh ok..didn't see that sticky. I can see it both ways about the deletion thing. I can see the good in having the edit function there...I can also see the integrity portion when users decide to delete the whole post. I like the idea of restricting abusers of their edit priviledges instead of the whole..if that option is available. I personally have only used the edit function maybe 15 times since I started, so I don't think I'll miss it very much. JMHO

Why is it bad to delete posts??? Imagine if all who posted in response to a post then edited to delete -- or every question posed was then deleted, or some of the posts in a thread were substanatively edited but the responses weren't.

There is NO delete button, there is NO delete button for a reason, it is not ok to use the edit button in place of the non-existant delete button.

When posts are deleted or edited substanatively it causes the following to occur:

The original post (if altered) makes the subsequent responses to the altered post read non-sensical, so one would be reading what they think is good advice based on a post that has been changed but the responses haven't been changed.

The archives, which could be our greatest resource, become useless because the information that was being responded to is missing -- makes the search function nearly useless too.

It makes all responses to whatever was first posted read as if those spending their time responding are in need of prozac and talking to themselves.

The discussion of whatever is posted is MORE valuable sometimes than the question itself, that is how we all learn from each other, through the interaction -- when the interaction is removed, you can only guess what WAS there.

One of the foundations of this board (versus from where we came) is that there is no obvious censorship, that is not to say never because some things obviously just need to be deleted, but threads won't be deleted because someone doesn't like them, doesn't agree, gave bad advice, gave good advice or wished they'd never posted in the first place. If someone tries to follow along (via search or in retrospect) the story is changed because what remains does not reflect what was.

A good explanation and thread shows just what I mean:

http://www.creditboards.com/phpBB2/viewtop...t=sassy+heal%2A

People knowing they are to be banned or plotting to be banned, deleting as many of their posts as possible before it happens.

Posting TOS violations and deleting them before admin/mods see them or they are quoted -- insults or solicitations for example.

Other boards don't have this problem, where we came from the problem was an overused delete button by the administration, there wasn't however a misuse of the edit button as if it were a delete button, and the only reason I can figure is that the majority of posters all felt the same way about it (thus one of the foundations of this board), established that standard in interactions and postings, it just wasn't done -- we valued the archives as much as the current threads, and the function was good for 15 minutes only.

I realize the search function and archives are highly underutilized at this site, whereas previously the expectation and standard was that cursory homework was done and there was a foundational understanding in place of the laws and regulations and basic information one needs to know before addressing their reports -- however, just because we've been accomodating doesn't mean we should destroy our greatest resource in the process.

Anyone can go to any board and have their 101 questions answered, the quality of information in the archives and integrity of this board in general (yes, we stand for something), is what sets us apart from the others.

BTW, I hear you all prior to the previous posting -- was answering the question, why should threads not be deleted.

It would be a bummer indeed to be without the edit function, I actually favor a timer on it but understand it isn't possible without quirks in this format.

Those that are going to purposefully abuse it, are going to purposefully abuse it, within 15 minutes or without 15 minutes.

We need to honor each other and the button, I say, if someone has responded to a post or quoted you, don't go back and change it substanatively or later use the edit to delete.

If we all use it the same way, with the same expectations and understandings, only those purposefully using it abusively will be doing so (or newbies not knowing, they don't count) and those purposeful ones will be dealt with.

I'd rather have back the standard, expectation and atmosphere as a general understanding instead of it just being removed.
