Since last Saturday, at 8:02 am, I've been receiving Zombie Debt Collector calls from someone called Jacob Law Group, in Oxford Mississippi.

They're robocalls and they call from 8am to 8:30pm, multiple times per day, announcing that this is a call from a debt collector. On Tuesday, one of their "collectors" called and left a message that they're trying to reach "Stacy", and to call them back ASAP. No further human calls have been received, but the robocalls never cease. There is NO "Stacy" here, there are no debts owed, and I've blocked their calls from ringing here and are automatically sent to voicemail. They have sent Nothing in writing to this date, and I have ZERO idea what they're doing calling my number incessantly. Any advice would be appreciated, before I go Postal on them. Not sure if I should call them, write them, do nothing, or file any appropriate complaints. Their number comes up on Caller ID as (877) 238-2868. Any experience or thoughts on these scumbags ? This is all the info that I have on them, except for that which I've gotten by Googling their number........

I would call them, give them the phone number they are calling, tell them you don't know Stacy and that you are giving them fair warning that continued calls will be reported as harassment to the appropriate state and federal officials. This has been working well for me.

Zombie collectors are fun to play with. We get them from time to time. One called a few weeks ago asking for someone who doesn't live here. I told them to hang on while I asked my cat if they'd seen this person. They were quick to say "sorry, wrong number" and hang up.

They'll be calling back in a few weeks, and I'll just do it again.

I had something similar about a year ago. I wrote a letter, CMRRR, that went something like this...

"You have been calling my phone number, xxx-xxx-xxxx, continuously for several weeks. I have no business with you or your company and I do not owe you anything. You will cease and desist calling this phone number immediately.

If you feel that you have business with me you will conduct said business via US mail.

If you do not have business with me, you will never again contact me in any way for any reason."

The calls stopped. Never heard from them again.

I also included my name and mailing address, as well as my phone number in the body of the letter, to make sure they could have no excuse for mistaken identity.

Answer and let the scumbags know it's the wrong number.

After that, any further calls will result in a police report for harassment. (And if you do, send them a copy)

If you are not the debtor/consumer, you will have to look outside the "credit laws".

Just think of it as being a crazy ex wife. :)

I know how that works too.

record any phone calls you make to them to notify them of their error...

also follow up with CMRRR C&D...

This often occurs with skip tracing. The debt collector ran a skip trace and probably discovered this phone number from one a deadbeat used to obtain credit; or put it on a form somewhere. It can also be an honest mistake where an application was filled out by hand and someone transposed a number.

I've gotten frantic calls before from an online pharmacy looking for someone. They would call several times a day. I finally told them "I hope she died because she sure hasn't been getting any drugs lately and I'm not going to give her any!" before Medco was finally convinced that there isn't a "Stacy" living here. [And the Stacy they were looking for lives in another state!]

It pays to waste the debt collector's time. As in, they pay for every minute you soak up. If the debt collector is constantly pegging a wrong number but not connecting the call to a live operator--they are paying nothing. Make them pay for the calls.

Answer each and every call they make.

Here's the best way to make them pay. Before they even finish their greeting just interrupt "can you hold on for one second?" and put the phone receiver down. Leave it like that for a good 20 minutes. Go back to what you were doing.

When their autodialer calls back they'll get a busy.

If you do this to a debt collector a few times, they will pull your number off the autodialer or suspend it from receiving because you're messing up their phone blasting. They'll do this for example if a child keeps answering the telephone when they call.

As long as the debt collector does not have your DOB/SSN and you aren't defaulted on anything, there's no way the collector will be messing up your credit report if all they have is a phone number.

As I indicated in another thread, think outside of the credit box.

It is also possible to have much fun with wrong numbers...when I was a kid, our home number had digits VERY similar to Emery Air Freight. We got wrong numbers a lot because people would transpose the two digits. I'm curious how much business we might have cost them over the years by 'transferring' those calls to the people that would 'schedule' the pick-up and delivery to IAH.

Just now, I missed a call from another "pond scum" human from this "Jacob Law Group", who left a message on yet ANOTHER of my telephone numbers.........my cell phone.........asking for "Stacy" and my last name, indicating an "important business matter" that must be taken care of "immediately". Insisted that I call "Reggie" back, at their toll-free number. This absolutely blows me away.......first my home number.......then a cell phone.......neither of which are listed or in the name of the person he was trying to reach..........Any more thoughts ?

Should I return the call, since I missed answering it ? (ringer was off, I discovered ) Thanks in advance.

Report it to the local police as telephone harassment and/or threatening calls. Ask the police to follow up with the telephone company. In fact, bring a copy of the police report to the telephone company offices or send CMRRR if the offices aren't close. The phone company will put a "trap" on the line. You will be instructed to push a button on your phone each time one of these "law firm" calls comes in. After several "hits", the phone company will notify the police that they have the evidence in hand and the police will notify the "law firm" to cease and desist or else prosecution will happen. That will shut them down very quickly.
