Interesting that when you read the press release HSBC indicates they would start issuing the card mid-late 2006. However, on their US site there is no mention.

I searched and searched again, and it appears they only offer this card (as of now) in Australia (NZ):

hsbc dot com.au/1/2/personal/credit-cards/amex

I wonder what's the hold up for the us?

HSBC is a subprime issuer.

Not all of their cards are subprime...

and some offer 2% cashback on all purchases ($400 cap per year)

Their GM card is NOT subprime

HSBC is a subprime issuer. If you want a cobranded Amex card evaluate Citi and/or BOA.

No, HSBC has some sub-prime offerings. They also have some products that have terms that are very competitive with other offerings commonly referred to as 'prime.'

My only problem with HSBC is that you will never be judged by your internal history with their automated underwriting system. Every new app. will always be a fresh pull, and your new CL and terms will always be set by what's on the report regardless of whether you've done all your banking, borrowing, etc. with them for ages and have sterling history. And, once you get stuck with that Orchard card or whatever, they won't upgrade or graduate it, ever.

Personally, I'd go with Nat'l City, a credit union, BOA, Citi, etc. They all have starter products as well as prime, but you will reach a point with them where your internal history will become the deciding factor as opposed to HAL2000.

What is the deal with this card...I want it more than ever since there is so much secrecy around how to apply, who can apply, etc...

Where are our credit gurus  ...squirrelgirl...you know everything..what's the scoop on this card?

Anyone know what the actual name is that HSBC calls this card?

HSBC Amex is under Account Central along with the Discover product, but their

is nothing but a phone number that is identified only for the amex account holders.

It is by invitation only....

I know :) that girls got it together :) I just thought since she most likely knew the answer, she (or some of the others that are higher up on the credit ladder  ) would eliminate this HSBC Amex question that keeps resurfacing

I think SG's standards are too high for HSBC :)

There must be some method to their madness for these invitations. It's not like HSBC is a top tier CCC.

I guess you are saying Account Central is another name for Direct Merchant since that's who the Discover is through...

That is where they parked the Amex. The only identity to Direct Merchant is on card

I have the Direct Rewards version and it says HSBC card Services for payment.
