Amex....What is their limit on cards you can have?

I know Amex didn't care in the past how many charge/credit cards you had with them. I currently have 3, and was looking to open another to help with AAOA. Some have reported the limit is 2 now. Can any recent applicants support this claim?

 

CK says I have a "C" grade in that area.

50K is not unheard of for credit cards. charge exposure is harder to know.

Yeah, I was going to close one of the smaller limit ones and open a new one, but you're probably right. I've been doing a good job of laying low and haven't suffered any AA, no need to bring unneeded attention.

I have 6 open and 4 closed on my reports. Recently converted gold to zinc when the annual fee came due. I've gotten AMex to pull TU for my last 3 apps by having EX frozen. Three of these cards were opened in the last 18 months. All 10 are listed with an opening date 22 years ago (when I opened my first Amex at 18). I haven't ever used any of these cards, ever, with the exception of one for credit secure. Amex apparently doesn't care about non use (at least for me).

Overtime, I have had & coverted a few and now left with 3 of their products. Member since '05 I think, but I havent used each in more than a year, no AA, all have CLs over 20K each.

I have not heard of Amex putting a limit on how many of thier products that you can have. I have done a good amount of conversions without any ill affects.

I've talked to a friend about this. She had a Blue and a Green and she applied for a Clear and she got instant declined with the message that she already had the maximum number of cards allowed. She then immediately (since you will not get another pull on the same day) applied for an AMEX Hilton and was instantly approved. So maybe they are currently starting to limit some people to so many cards of different types. Different categories maybe. I bet they would let you have as many charge cards as you want, just not the credit cards. A couple of years ago I think you could have one of each of their cards if you wanted. Might have changed the rules for new applicants.

amex is good to many consumers. my spouse has been treated very well in terms of limits and service. I almost wished she'd ask for a CLI since it is now one of her lowest limits (30K)

He had no idea about AAOA or anything else. I've been educating him. Helped him pull his credit report yesterday and here was this closed Amex with a 1969 member since date and closed. I had to sit down when I saw it.

 

He closed it, George...just didn't need it. Per my suggestion, he's trying to re-open it or will get another one.

Maybe they limit you to one charge, one credit, and however many co-brands there are?

 

I have Blue and Gold, and got a Costco last month with no problem.

I have Amex Gold, Blue and Skymiles. I would love to add another just to help my AAOA. (member since 1989)

So if anyone has luck with getting more than 3, please post here. I would even be willing to close the blue since they CLD me to 500 from 8000....for NO reason! Needless to say I dont use it. If I close, it would still help my AAOA for 10 years, right?
