I'm sure many of the CBs wouldn't even need to be concerned with this, but decided to post for those of us more credit challenged.

I made a car rental reservation with Hertz and intended to put the rental on my debit card (the credit cards I have don't have very high limits) which required a credit check. I called to find out if the credit pull really was true and yes, it is. I went into the location before actually renting (wanted to avoid any day of rental embarrassment by not being 'credit worthy, my scores are NOT high) and was asked for my id and debit card, I still thought, "Oh, it's like Blockbuster, they're not REALLY gonna pull my credit." Oh, yes they DID! They pulled Equifax...the rental agent told me that I was good as long as I didn't make any large purchases such as a mortgage (as if I could). Anywho, I'm really not sure what they look at, maybe they actually check "Experifax", ha ha ha, cause I don't know how I was good, but hey.

Just a heads up,

NEVER USE A DEBIT CARD TO RENT A CAR...PROBLEM SOLVED

(even if you have to get a credit card with only $500 available)

I never realized they were pulling your credit if you used a debit card. I checked cct a few nights ago after I joined this board and I couldn't figure out why hertz was listed as a pull lol

As I stated, this is mainly geared toward the credit challenged, which means, unfortunately, that a credit card may not be an option or there may be other issues involved, such a low limit card, something came up, it was last minute and someone's balance was high on their CC, and so many other factors. Just as you have had many CLDs, it may happen to someone and their only option is a debit card (and they don't accept prepaid debit cards, either).

iCarl,

As George stated, it is definitely a HARD pull. I was thinking it was gonna be soft, but nope

Joseph,

I can't remember who posted previously about a woman at Hooters CC calling it "Experifax"...gets me laughin everytime, ha ha ha.

MissTaken,

Yea, I definitely felt the same way when I refreshed my USAA report this morning, I just went to Hertz yesterday afternoon :P!

Good information to remind folks about every so often. There are several circumstances where one might find themselves needing to rent a car using a debit card, they should know about the possible credit pull. IIRC not all car rental places do it, but I've forgotten which do and which do not.

A couple years back a rep from Enterprise told me they also pull for secured cards.

I can't say if that's true or not, but its worth keeping in mind.

They probably didn't know what they were talking about, how would they know if it was secured or not?

Right. They can tell who the issuer is but there isn't any info beyond that given to them.

I can say I have used debit at car rentals and have never had a credit pull. I do have to qualify that statement by saying the last one was Jan 2008 at Alamo. I don't know what might have changed since then. I have used Alamo, National, Enterprise and Budget. May have used Hertz but can't remember for sure.

Thats better than my experiences in the past w/ debits and car rentals.

Some places wouldnt even rent with a debit card, credit cards only.

Those that did seem to really enjoy putting an extra $500+ on hold

then taking 7-10 days to release the money..

Budget doesn't pull if you use a debit card, unless something has changed within the past few months.

I know for a FACT Budget, DOES pull credit for Debit Card uses here in California, Los Angeles Airport.

My brother went to rent a car and was DENIED due to informaiton on Equifax. My brother called me panic'd asking me to use my name to rent a car for him, which , I did. I also used my debit card, but my credit was approved.

My equifax was pulled. A Hard Pulled.

Fyi, my brother never got a denial letter in the mail, so he doesnt know why they denied him. His score is in the mid 600's.

Mines is little over 700.

I have heard the same. TO rent a car you need to be: 1) 25 or 27 or Older, 2) Have a Credit Card they will put a hold on funds (I heard same info about Secured Card treated like Debit Card,) and 3) Everything Else you could possibly think of.

You get past the RENTING ISSUE...

You can always pay for it with your DEBIT CARD or CASH when you return

Not always an option for everyone. When I was just treading water, there's no way I could've gotten even a $500 secured card. It just wasn't going to happen.

Why not just get a credit card...PROBLEM SOLVED

Even if it is only $500

Even if it is an "AU" card from a relative<---***

You're talking to someone who hasn't been in bad financial shape for some 30+ years and is not known for being able to put himself in other peoples shoes.

Instead of using a debit card you should just get a $50,000 penfed visa.

Ummm WHEN is my Post going to make it in?

I can also confirm they pull Reports. They want you to be 25 or 27 or Older, and they ask for "Everything" and they hold Money and they take their tiiime givin it back.

To the Poster that never had a letter about the Denial show up: Yup. Goes to show you that Creditors lile JB Robinson also lie, they make stuff, up, no letter comes, and thats just what they do. So the Rules are whatever they want them to be.

Not ONE single friend/relative has an "AU" card you can have so you can just rent a car

They are not going to pay for the rental...

NO PARENTS

NO BROTHERS

NO SISTERS

NO KIDS

NO GIRLFRIENDS/BOYFRIENDS

NO SPOUSE

NO RELATIVES OF ANY KIND

If not...oh well

Bring your bike...
