Navy isn't all it's cracked up to be. I'm in and passed a security review and seriously don't understand what the hype is. There are other credit unions that are just as good and are easier to get into.

When you get a XX,XXX CL, you'll know what all the hype is! :good:

I did get approved for a card on my acceptance to NFCU

Congratulations! Based on your creditworthiness, you have been approved for a cashRewards Visa credit card. Your new credit line will be $25,000.00. Your APR will be prime plus 6.4%. You should receive your new card(s) in 7-10 normal mail delivery days.

But another credit unions would also easily give me that. Such as PSECU

Congrats, that's awesome! But PSECU cc MAX is 20K. NFCU MAX is 50K, and can go to 80K on Flagship...

I could PM you another credit union that is quite elite and will give you similar lines of credit.

Maybe so... It would be interesting to figure out what causes that. I know I joined based on my grandfather's eligibility (not a member) and had no problems. My wife since joined based on my membership and now has a 13k CC with them and never a second question. We even went into a branch to submit our signature forms and deposit my initial $5 and not even a funny look from the account rep.

That was my experience also...I joined based on my father's service in the Navy 30+years ago (he is not a member) and had no problems at all. I applied online - they called me verified my information over the phone and I submitted my signature forms through the mail and my deposit check at a branch. No issues, no questions. My husband is going to join in the next week based off my membership. NFCU is incredible..will never bank anywhere else again. The customer service reps are the best...

There's CB 6 month stay under the radar rule with NFCU for those that get in under questionable eligibility. People get impatient and app too quickly and then have to deal with their security police which has the rep of being not so nice compared to their super nice CSRs.

I just want to chime in and say that NFCU can be very vicious... We had to file BK on them. They were the only reason we filed BK they refused to work with us they would not do any payment arrangements they would not do anything to help us and really all of our debt was with them. because of cross collateral they started taking our payments out of our checking with out of our knowledge on our paydays the minute the money hit so we couldn't pay our rent, have gas in our cars or feed our kids. SO we cancelled our auto deposits they called our houses 10-15 times a day. Then when we would call and complain about the many calls they would say "we track how many times your called so you are exaggerating plus just pay your bills and it wouldn't happen.... so when are you going to pay these bills so I can stop these calls?"

Fast forward- with all of that we filed bankruptcy because of them entirely our other debts were <5k we could have got out of debt with money management even with my unemployment and subsequent illness in no time... SO they "Punished us" by redating all of our debt they closed all of our accounts effect the filling date in early dec of 2007 and reopened them another date in dec so we have 2 accounts for every account we had with them...(just one of the reasons we hired the credit attorney to help recently)... and when we contacted them thinking OH maybe it was an error because if you ever deal with them their system if ARCHAIC they had the nerve to tell me in the messaging system - WE CLOSED YOUR ACCOUNTS and had to reopen them in our bankruptcy system as bankrupt accounts and if you think this is an error feel free to dispute this with the credit bureaus.

TU deleted all but 2 accounts so far just reading that message print out- waiting on the investigation for other two. BUT While they offer great credit if you ever have a problem they are vicious.

Our vehicle loan is with them and they will not give us a copy of our terms, an explanation of how we owe so much nothing. Our attorney sent them notice today that we dispute the balance so I hope they do - we went back and tracked all of our payments for 5 years and we show we should owe even with interest 2000 and they say we owe 9700.... I think they are trying to recoup money or they tacked additional payments on or maybe it's an HONEST error on my part or theirs HOWEVER an explanation IS IN ORDER!!! :( They also say we have been late 18 times and 2 180 day lates in 5 years and we were only late during our BK which shouldn't count per the BK attorney... But again hopefully attorney will get fixed UGH!

SO When your GOOD THEIR AMAZING but if anything ever goes sorry whether it's your fault, circumstance, a little of both (and our circumstance was both- we spent too much, didn't save enough and then our circumstance was out of our control so things WERE OUR FAULT TOO!) They can be NASTY!!!!

Quoted for posterity.

i had a friend living with us that was a navy customer. she got myself and my wife in. she moved in with her new husband about 6 months ago, haven't talked to her at all since. navy just flagged my account, and since she no longer lives with us, they are canceling my wife's and my account.

Some CUs explicitly state that room/house-mates need to be part of an economic entity to qualify.

That's why having utility bills with both names helps in proving eligibility.

Navy Fed may also have that requirement as an unstated understanding.

From NFCU's website:

"*Household members who are eligible through existing members MUST reside at the same address and make an economic contribution to the financial stability of the household of the existing member."

The financial stability part isn't defined further. I would think that involves helping out with the household expenses in some way (like paying the gas bill). If you and the sponsoring member each had a utility bill in your own names at the same address, I would think that would be enough proof.

I would be extremely surprised if the credit union would enforce a rule that household membership terminates once the sponsoring member moves out. That would go against the "once a member, always a member" slogan credit unions are always using. But something like a friend living with you temporarily when they are on vacation wouldn't qualify, if that is what they're suspicious of.

At least that's the way I read it.

NFCU Just called my roomate, and asked her how she was enjoying her 2 day old account and asked her if she wanted to apply for a credit card, BAM! 5k!

So I guess they are pushing credit now!

I'm looking into joining NFCU. My late grandfather was retired Navy. I have no idea if he was ever a member. :( I have started the process to obtain his DD214. Hearing about NFCU freezing accounts have made me a bit scared to even try.

Just got off the phone with NFCU. I AM eligible through my Grandpa! I'm all set up! :yahoo::yahoo: Was kind of shocked they didn't want any of my grandpa's info. Not even close to ready to app for anything...but I'm happy anyway. ( will have his DD214 in hand before I do....just in case)

Congrats OP.

A relative recently came off of "active" status, but their ID does not expire for a while yet. Anyone know if he could apply and fax a copy of their ID in, or can they tell from the seven digit number that I understand they ask for that they are no longer active ? His brother is the one who wants to apply if he gets in.

I just dealt with a similar situation. I came off active duty june of 2010. When you enlist in the military, it is actually an 8 year commitment but you choose how much to serve on active duty. The usual active duty time is 4 years, the remaining 4 years are either spent in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) or in the regular reserves or national guard.

If he only served 4 years and is not in the regular reserves, then he still would have IRR time until he reaches 8 years. This is the program that allows the military to recall you to active duty if they need you. You aren't free and clear until after 8 years, even if you only signed up for 4.

He is still technically in the military even though he does not do anything anymore. NFCU allowed me to join based on this IRR commitment that I have remaining.

I also found out through this board that he could take his DD-214 paperwork up to a DEERS (id card facility) on post/base and get an IRR I.D card that would allow some military benefits again such as commissary and PX privileges.

Find out if he is still within 8 years of when he first enlisted. If he is, he should know what the IRR is. Let him know that gives him eligibility.

I was in the Navy from 92-96 and I applied for NFCU back in April and was accepted. I just received a phone call a week ago saying i was ineligible and they cancelled my account and 2 credit cards. Make sure you are eligible in every way.

My grandfather is a Retired Lt. Col. in the Army. He is not a member. My wife's uncle is in the Air Force Reserves (I believe he is a member). My half brother is in the National Guard. He is not a member. Can I use any of these relationships to gain entrance into NFCU?

Just an update- I spoke to an account specialist at NFCU and my Retired Lt Colonel Grandfather (who is not a member) grants me eligibility. I'm excited!

After three years of trying to find a way I might be in. My mother in law agreed to join three days ago, I paid her five dollar share fee. Do I need to get my wife to join or is the mother in law relationship acceptable to get in?
