Most, if not all banks, will not let you close an account that is negative. You will have to bring it up to a 0 balance then close it. If you don't then more than likely you will go into chexsystems hell. goo luck

I never understood what chexsystems really is

Basically it's a CRA type entity for bank accounts. If you have an account go bad and not brought current your entered as a derog in chex. They also keep track of how many accounts you open as well, something to keep in mind before going on a CU spree.

My bank won't let me close or freeze my account. In the mean time it's being continuously overdrawn and I'm being charged multiple fees. What can I do?

You need to (1) rescind any automatic payment authorizations that are out there, and (2) stop writing checks. You haven't said why this is happening, so it's hard to suggest anything to help.

pardon my interruption...why would the number of CUs make any difference?

greater chances of debit/check cashing fraud on the instution. You can open an account with $25 and you can spend $200 on that fresh new temp debit card. Dodd act.

I don't think you can break it down any better than that. Thanks.

You need to stop using the account and get a positive balance in there before closing. Why are you still using it if you need to close it?

Always always have more then one checking account for this reason.

I have another checking account, but in the mean time, this fees on this one are adding up.

How can I get them to freeze my acount or put it on hold? so that I have a chacne to pay it off?

I'm not using the account. Payments are being automatically withdrawn.

ETA: I see what you mean. I wasn't aware of what I needed to do in oder to clsoe it, outside of the account not being negative. If hat was they case I would not have made a puchase that morning.

Your bank should tell you what they require to dishonor any auto payments that are attempted. Go in to a branch in person and ask for their help.

To close it safely and cover your bases, you need to send two certified letters: one to the Company receiving the funds stating effective immediately, ACH authorization to your checking account is revoked - I would provide amount of ACH, date, bank and account withdrawn from but if this is a debt you owe and not a subscription or such, others hopefully will chime in as to whether account # is not good, one to your bank saying the same thing but with account details and such. With your bank, also send a copy of what you sent to the Company . The bank has to abide. Keep your green slips for years. Now the third letter should also go to your bank stating you want your accounts closed effective immediately and to forward any remaining balance to you via check. Be specific about your account in the body of the letter ie checking account, account #, saving account account #. Provide the address to send the check and provide your contact number in case.

You must do the first two right away to grasp hold of those fees which by the way.

Wild guess... Payday loan gone bad?

Is that really a wild guess or did you search my post history? haha.

That's exactly what it is.

Pure wild guess.

I had the same thing happen to me in 2007. Had a payday loan and they tried to take it out on friday but I had no money so it went negative. They then tried to get it 3 times a day for the next week. My account went negative $2044 and is on my credit report now and I can not get a bank account. Luckily when it hit -2K dollar bank closed the account.

oh also, these people are relentless. They will call everyone you know, you have known, and that you will know in the future. If they amount is not too large you might want to just get this thing paid now before they haunt you like they haunt me. I deal with a new caller at least every other week and I am 6 years from it happening.

Who did you bank with?

I am going to call them and see if there is a limit. If they were to freeze the account and disallow any non-deposits, it would be much easier. I have no problem paying what I owe.
