Decided to go for it and file a BK, only have checking with wells fargo and have an outstanding balance on an old account with them as well. I went to a local bank and they said they couldn't help me until the wells fargo derog was removed. I'm going to include the 900 overdraft mistake of checking account in my bk so need to find a bank asap. Im in MN, and have 3 direct deposits, no fraudulent flags on chex or ews.

I opened checking and savings at TCF Bank in Michigan a few years ago with Chase and HSBC reporting to Chex. I know they have locations in Minnesota. Checking is completely free with no minimum balance, direct deposit, or minimum transaction requirements.

How about Visa prepaid? Direct with Visa, reloadable online, accepts direct deposits.

Has Wells closed your account yet? Hope you have no cash in your account. They are known for closing accounts when a BK is filed even when this isn't a BK'd account with them.

There are a ton of options for reloadable debit cards with direct deposit, just make sure you review the fees before you sign up. There are some cards that charge a fee every time you swipe! Some cards if you want to use it at a gas station pump you must have a certain amount available or pay inside for the exact amount. Also if you will need to withdraw cash from a ATM check the daily withdrawal limits. I had a Wired Plastic card for a few years when I couldn't get a bank account. I only could withdraw $500 per day from the ATM but my rent was $620 so I would have to go to the ATM 2 days in a row, paying about $5 in fees total each time. But other than that I loved Wired Plastic, the monthly fee was only $4.95, I could make electronic payments for 0.45 and send a paper check for 0.95. Finally there are some cards that offer early direct deposit, meaning if you usually get paid on Friday you can access the money on Wednesday, but dont be lulled, the fees to use these cards are usually predatory!

Marina,

Be sure to send in the docs of your discharge after the fact. That way the amounts owed can be updated to 0. This will make things a lot easier on you when applying to accounts down the road.

What exactly do you mean? I don't belive Chex actually removes the defaulted accounts. EWS does. So for Chex the entries would be updated to 0 instead of showing a balance. Because of this, It's a lot easier to obtain a checking account. A lot of banks will work with you if you don't owe anything on Chex. Even though you still have entries listed. You can do this as SOON as you discharge.

do the entries ever fall off?

My husband and I had a checking account in 2006, that was closed for overdrafts. His paychecks are currently being garnished for it, but it's not showing at all, on either of our Chex reports (I got copies of our reports a few weeks ago). I've heard that Chex entries fall off after 5 years.

Actually chex will remove the entire entry from your report once you send them bk info. You don't even need to wait for discharge. EWS sometimes removes the entry but typically they just update it to zero and it'll remain for the duration of the 7 year initial reporting date.

You do not HAVE to have a prepaid card. There is a bank in GA called Renasant.. yes you bank by mail, but with direct deposit and opening it online, its worth it. USAA is the best, but same scenario. Check local credit unions too!!! The service center for Credit unions is a great benefit to have too.

The opposite was true for me. Chex removed and EWS just updated to $0.
