With all the horror stories of NFCU retroactively ousting people, I would be real sweet to mom, and badger her mercilessly till she joined.

ohmy.gif Really? But I thought I was legitimately eligible as his stepdaughter! I'm not?

You ARE eligible, but when the security department picks you to verify eligibility, it's MUCH easier to just point to mom, who has an account.

But then I have to put her through aggravation and paperwork for an account she doesn't particularly want, and I don't want to do that to her. It took me a while to get up the nerve to ask if she had easy access to his DD-214, and she said just hearing that term brought her right back to when he passed. sad.gif

You're probably going to be fine, I think Navy is more harsh on the roomie thing than parentage.

Just be prepared to produce that DD-214 some time in the future.

Will do. She knows where it is, and knows I may have to use it. Thanks. smile.gif

Anyone who works for TSA is eligible. Airport screeners etc.

I was about to say no to that, but I just went through the "Membership Eligibility Wizard" on their website, and if all you check is you're a U.S. Government Civilian Employee you get a message that you're eligible. Unless there's something I'm missing, it looks like you can even be a temporary employee at any Government agency (even non DoD or not stationed at a DoD facility) and be eligible.

And according to their websites, sponsor must have an account first for the sponsoree to be eligible. Now I realize some people have been deemed eligible even their relative does not have an account after speaking with a csr. But as we've witnessed, the csr signing people up for account doesn't make the final eligibility decision. So yeah, I'd do everything possible to make sure eligibility matches that of online conditions...

I don't see where it says you need the sponsor to open an account and the eligibility wizard doesn't say that. In fact when I called in the CSR told me I couldn't join unless my sponsor did.

It does say once your family members are members they can get their family in but its implying if you get your brother in he can get his kids in, since you can't get them in directly.

Yeah, implication is open to interpretation. All I can say is back when I joined - 2006 - I was explicitly told my grandpops had to be a member first.

As we've seen, those who have either been flagged for eligibility proof or shut down first entirely are those who joined outside the criteria listed on the website (those not having the actual family sponsor as a member)

Any other eligibility paths are open to the actual CU employees. And those may be changed throughout the process.

At the end of the day, the only membership given way is to have the family member join first...

I echo Gaby's sentiment. The website says I am eligible. So, to do my own criterion checklist and post here, for possible CU number three in the future...

1. I am immediate family. (Son of Marine Corps; Grandson of US Army.)

2. Father is still alive; Grandfather is not. Father is USMC Purple heart recipient.

3. Both my father and grandfather were HONORABLY DISCHARGED after completion of their tour. I confirmed thsi yesterday with the person that would know. Neither "resigned" service. I do not know if this is "retired."

Am I eligible?

As I understand it, NFCU distinguishes between Retired (eligible) and Discharged (not eligible). Retirement requires a minimum of 20 years in the military.

You are eligible.

Even if your brother is deceased, you are still eligible.

You would be best to open your account either in a branch or to call us at any time. We can bypass the access# and notate the acct if the membership is opened right away. :)

My dad was just offered a job with the DoD, teaching Chinese to middle school kids in Guam. I do not live with him, but would I be eligible based on taking this job? I think the answer was yes but I want to be sure. Also what kind of documentation would I need and how soon can I apply?

Have your father join NFCU first, he should be eligible as a DoD employee.

DoD contractors apparently have to work primarily at a military facility to be eligible.

I will try to get clarirfication on exactly what he classifies as, but he won't be willing to join NFCU just so I can get a credit card. He is spooked enough after my Pen Fed disaster since we have the same name but different middle name. I will just hope I qualify as his son, maybe I'll just give them a call.

just called NFCU, told them my dad is a civilian DoD employee. She said the family member rule only applies to people who are actually in one of the armed forces, not a DoD person. So I am not eligible because he is civilian DoD apparently. Bummer.

She may have been referring to you joining without your dad joining first.

Once he DOES join, and is a member, family members are eligible.

I was just looking through the "eligibility checklist." I don't know if someone has already posted about this but if you use the wizard and only select yes to be a family member of one of the above (last option) a new "details" link comes up. It reads (i'll highlight the important part): "This includes those whose family members are currently a member of Navy Federal or eligible for membership." Just to clear up whether your eligible family member has to be a member or not...

I was told my grandpops needed to be a member. A few members here have been able to join without their "sponsor"being a member fist But the website does indicate the sponsor does need to be a member. Your best course of action is to call and describe your affiliation and let Navy determine whether you qualify...

What you were told was incorrect.

You are eligible. Your father does not need to join (unless they request that he do so) but for you to join initially you just need to call or go into a branch.

Just be prepared to show proof of your father's DoD affiliation.

ALL DoD are eligible. Military, civilians, and their immediate families.
