I rarely carry more than $5.00 in vending machine pocket change

Soon you won't need to as more vending machines take credit cards.

Massachusetts turnpike rest stops all take credit card for vending now, for example.

Like, I would do that? I would not use a credit or a debit card at an unmanned vending machine. Cash or a gift card is the only thing the vending machine is getting.

I've used a credit card without fear in many vending machines across the country.

You must jingle as you walk.

Anyway, I'd prefer CCs at an unmanned vending machine than cash... and I have no "UNNATURAL FEAR" of cash.

Hegemony & Uncle leo why would you use your credit card at a vending machine? I have seen those in person. Very easily could fool someone. So how would you tell the fake credit card terminals from the real one on a pop machine? I was even able to jiggle it, it looks like it was just stuck on. Same with the ad label. Use credit card here to get your pop, same price. I could of actually remove the terminal if I wanted too. I didnt of course.

THE HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS I STAYED AT NEAR CMH HAD A CREDIT CARD READER FOR THE WASHER and DRYER

I didn't wash any clothes...but it was available

Thanks for all of the information. I went ahead and made an online complaint to MasterCard based on the $25 minimum and their asking to see ID. I also asked reimbursement for the ATM fees, though I won't hold my breath on that. I already talked politely to their manager -- it is not a chain restaurant. He was the one who was most dismissive and rude.

Be sure to notify Visa as well. Simply call 1-800-VISA-911, press zero twice, and ask to file an "incident report" regarding both violations. Crooked merchants shape-up quickly to avoid suspension. Make sure your community is 100% violation-free. :)

Why should he contact Visa. There was NO violation present of any Visa merchant agreements. Making up incidents when no violation occurred is NOT a good thing and should not be encouraged.

A violating merchant who attempts to require ID or a minimum with MasterCard will also do the same with Visa. Simply offer a Visa card instead to be sure. The most important thing is making sure it never happens again, so if any violating merchant should ever pop-up in your community, make sure they are eliminated/brought back into line immediately - 1-800-VISA-911.

This is new...copy and paste the same crap roughly an hour apart.

But it matters not whether they MIGHT do the same with a different card. If they have NOT done so, then there is NO violation, perceived or otherwise. Making crap up only waters down the process...a frivolous administrative complaint hurts those with legitimate issues just as much as frivolous litigation hurts Plaintiffs with a real case...

probably LESS risk for fraud as no human is there to copy any information down.

And you are not responsible for fraud with Visa/MC/AmEx.

Zero liability makes for a great ad campaign, but the reality is that it does not stop your credit from being jacked up when you get hit by fraud...been there, done that. Close to $200K worth of been there, done that. Zero liability DID NOTHING to fix the problem.

And an unattended location would be the IDEAL place for people to put skimmers into place...

Curiously, the policy-bots never have an answer for when it doesn't work as advertised.

because any cash I carry is too expensive to replace while I am on the road.

skimmers and other scams don't scare me when I use a credit card. only people with debit cards need to worry.

I cant believe what you just said, you said in another post debit cards are good for some people. You cant have it both ways.

Also, have you ever tried to dispute a fraudulent charge with a credit company. That is very difficult. That has been my experience. I still ended having to pay. I read even on here people had trouble disputing a fraudulent credit card charge. One person fought for four months and this person credit score was shot even after they credited the account.

perhaps you should read what I wrote?

while traveling, withdrawing cash would be expensive. Why would I burn through the cash I carry with me if I don't have to? Moreover you asked why I would use my card in a vending machine. I gave you my honest answer. I apologize that my answer did not conform to your standards. I have never had a problem with credit card disputes. Often when people have problems with such things it is due to a lack of understanding how these procedures work (e.g., perhaps doing everything on the phone instead of in writing).

I should of worded my question differently.

Why take the risk of using any card at vending machine?

Let me see if I can explain where I am coming from.

So hypothetically, you use your card at a vending machine (It was a skimmer).

You get back home. You noticed a lot of unauthorized charges. So, you have to call your bank and get you card hotlisted and get a new one. Then you got to fill out or type a dispute letter to the card company certified return receipt. You have to pay for postage including the CRF fee. Then you are without a credit card for 10-12 days. You could of avoided all this hassle and time by putting coins in the machine.

That is one reason I dont use unattended vending machine, car wash, pay at the pump, Dvd rentals (Red box) with any type of card. (With the exception of a prepaid gift card-that is not reloadable)

I would be more worried about a human stealing my card info than an unattended vending machine.

I would not be without a card for 10-12 days since I have back ups, including my local CU which can make a card for me while I wait.

I can see if you only have one of them. I always go on vacation with 2 backups left where I am staying in the hotel safe and 1 backup in my shoes.

In your shoe? Ouch. Wouldnt you break the card that way?

I can picture this. Hold on please, I got to get card out of my shoe.

Nope, shockingly. I put it under the foam pad and didn't notice it while walking. The shoe thing is really only good if you get mugged.
