This is the contact info for the Gaps corporate HQ

Two Folsom Street

San Francisco, CA 94105

(650) 952-4400

I would ask to speak to loss prevention ASAP

I would also consider taking this to your local media outlets and consumerist.com AFTER you filed your police report...their clerk steals your wallet then they wont call her OR the police??? WTF???

Have you checked your accounts for activity yet? It is imperative that you do and call ALL of the CC issuers asap and let them know your wallet was stolen. Because you didnt notify the issuers immediately you may be liable for those charges and may have to sue the gap to get that $$$ back.

So I just got off the phone with one of the two Gap managers-she believes STILL that it may just be a error of the employee and she has agreed to provide me with the name, address and phone of the employee. She also said it is policy for the employee not to be contacted prior to her returning to work by either a manager or loss prevention so at the earliest that is sometime next week, giving plenty of opportunity to ditch or do otherwise with my wallet and its contents. The reasoning is to stage a face to face confrontation versus a over the phone situation. I guess I am out of luck.

DO NOT CALL THE EMPLOYEE.

You are not out of luck. And how can it be an error when the employee had an opportunity to return the wallet to you -- but refused (by saying she didn't know where it was) to do so when you asked for it? There is a video tape. The police will be interested in that video tape.

Also, Gap is creating all kinds of trouble here. What in the heck is Gap doing giving you the employee's name, address, and phone number? Someone at Gap needs to get fired. People are certainly not being trained properly.

I love this. An error? What, the wallet jumped in to the employee's pocket? In error, the employee took the wallet after the wallet jumped into the pocket? These Gap employees sound unbelievable to me.

I'd be on the phone with corporate at this point. And the police need to do their job. A Gap employee has stolen your wallet.

Terribly sad, someone's child was desperate, and ended up deciding theft was going to be her fate in 2007.

yep...really sad that someone made the decision to commit a crime, knowing the consequences of their actions...

too bad

Technically I dont think they can say she meant to do it ..without speaking to her first ... so I see them saying an error of the employee

The problem here is that the wallet was turned in to the cashier by the customer behind her. The OP went back 10 mins later and asked the same cashier if her wallet was turned in and the cashier looked her in the eye and stated NO. Then the wallet was not turned into the store manager etc. I think it's clear what the intent was but the OP really needs to check her CC and bank acct asap for unauthorized transactions....

Ok I've been checking my accounts since yesterday and there has been no activity. I called about 1 hour after first noticing my wallet was gone and found the funds had not been touched and locked all my cards and accounts. Which led me to believe from the beginning someone in Gap had it because if it was lost in the mall it would have been used or turned in already. I wish I had been more pushy now that I look back. Will keep you all posted as the day goes on.

I would go ahead and file a police report now, first. Then call the Gap's corporate office, ask for loss prevention and notify them that you have done just that. I would also make it clear to the Gap's corporate office that due to their inhouse staff refusing to even so much as contact the cashier they can pay to replace any id missing. Also, loss prevention will likely want to avoid this being a legal and media matter.

File your police report FIRST, then deal with the gap. My guess is being on the west coast that office wont open until noon east coast time.

My guess is this cashier realized she was in a world of trouble when the manager offered to check the tapes, thus smartly chose not to try and use your debit cards. However you can check the accts online but only your bank will know if there were any attempted charges that were declined. Those wont show up in your online banking.

Alenaya, you need to call the police and meet the police and the manager at the store. They will review the videotape and then the police will probably demand the employee's name and address from the store so they can start looking for her and your wallet.

The manager should've suggested you do that as soon as you saw the videotape, before the trail became cold. This manager is covering for the employee for some reason and trying to obstruct you. It could be because they are friends or relatives, or maybe she just doesn't want to have to deal with firing an otherwise good employee and finding a replacement. Realize though that the manager is not your friend.

Since the manager has also acted improperly, you have a good cause of action against Gap for any money losses you may incur.

What's amazing is that the manager you spoke with this morning thought it might have been employee error, yet went ahead and gave you the employee's personal information.

The manager is very wrong for that. One, they could have given the information to someone that would try to play civilian cop, and end up killing the employee.

I would be proactive in pursing the cops to get them to prosecute this employee at this point, because for all you know the manager that leaked the information might have called the employee to let them know of the situation. You don't know much more at this point. I hope you were able to cancel every card you own.

I hope this isn't the type of manager that "cycles" his or her security tapes.. you need to get a police report ASAP so they can get that security tape... we had an event like that at a retail store I worked at a long time ago - problem is if there wasnt a security issue that day, they wrote over the tape 3 days later...

That's what I was thinking. I've worked in retail before and we did the same exact thing. The VCR was right in the back room for everyone to mess with as well. Very easy for an employee to go up and just rewind the tape to record over it. I'd file that police report now if you haven't already. I'd venture a guess to say that the tape will not be available much longer..

Why do you people have SSN as ID# on health insurance cards? I always demand different number to be placed on.

No checks and account numbers in my wallet.

One or two debit cards. NO PINS !!

More credit cards than debit!

if you have the name and address...then give it to the police...have her arrested...simple

Agreed.

Any updates?

I can't believe Gap store management didn't act immediately to bring the employee back in, even by offering her an extra shift. Is this not a pretty busy shopping season? Why is she not working again until next week? Sounds fishy to me.

Were you able to contact Gap's internal loss prevention people? I'm sure they'd want to know that the manager has behaved thus so far.

I don't know that a stolen wallet is a big priority for the police, but yeah, let's hope they catch up with her before she tosses your wallet in a dumpster because you only had a very little bit of cash and she didn't know what to do with the rest of the stuff in there, because if she actually tried to use any of your cards, she could, you know, like get into real trouble, you know?

Oy.

OP, have you called corporate yet?

Gap cares about its image. Let them know that you are hoping to get this addressed ASAP. If they can't help you ASAP, you'll have to spread this situation around the Internet -- so as to get feedback on how to handle the situation. That should get their attention. I imagine that Gap doesn't want this kind of story being spread all over the Internet.

I would add, fax HQ and mention you've contacted local news hawks...

And the GAP mgmt is going to wait till she comes in next week to work???? What if she Quits!? She must know by now she's on tape.

I hope OP gets the police involved, GAP mgmt clear up to Corp.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but after the GAP mgmt gave me her name/contact info I would have had the police come to the store itself if possible....If someone shoplifted fm the GAP they'd at least call mall security and/or the cops.

I just hope this is resolved to the satisfaction of the OP and the thief gets what coming to he/she.

Yesterday I went to Gap outlet at a local mall, as they were having a great sale...30-40% off lowest prices. Bought DD a huge bagful of clothes and walked up to the register. Asked cashier to ring each item and tell me the final price so I could decided whether to purchase or not. Cashier said don't worry she would give me some type of "discount". Original final price around $70 something, but after cashier added in additional 15% OFF EACH item, bill fell to $38, and after I gave old reciept to do price adjustment for anything that went on sale since Xmas Eve, $5 more knocked off. No complaints from me...I said thanks. Came time to pay took out wallet and paid. Seemingly, walked away from register and wallet fell out of pocket. Kind customer behind me gives to cashier, who sticks it on the side of the register and does not log or tell manager my wallet fell. Came back 10 minutes later frantic, couldn't find wallet after ordering food in food court. Cashier looks me in the eye and says she never saw it, her manager offers to check cameras, but I assumed I had dropped it and lost it...so decline offer. Two hours later, return to store and request manager check camera (friendly cashier gone by this time). After nearly 40 minutes of looking at video, two managers return to tell me friendly cashier pocketed my wallet and left. Apologized and promised to conduct internal investigation. My question now is what do I do, I am out of a wallet, license, checks, 3 debit cards, and health ins cards which have SSN listed. This is a huge blow to my credit repair process and I'm really stressed out..hence being on here at 1 am typing my story. I have already cancelled all debit cards and put a hold on checking and savings accounts..last time I was in BOA teller insisted on writing all my account numbers on a card, which I STUPIDLY stored in my wallet. Also, should I say/do anything which is concerned with Gap?? Any and all suggestions/comments great...TIA!

Cancel all your cards, contact the police which is what you should of done the moment they told you their employee stole the wallet.
