I used to always sign them as the banks requested, but I haven't in the last couple of years, and no one's asked me to sign them.

If I lost my card, I'd rather that the thief not have my signature readily available.

Are there any reasons why I should sign them?

ALWAYS

"VOID IF NOT SIGNED"

"NOT VALID UNLESS SIGNED"

Signing the card confirms I can charge your account for what you just bought at WAL*MART and you agree to the credit card company terms

Do you sign the back of your credit cards when you receive them? Why should you or why shouldn't you sign them?
I always write "check ID" on the back. The funny thing is that only about 40% of people ask to see ID. I went to get a cash advance at a BofA branch (from my DCU visa), the teller told me that she needed another piece of ID in addition to my D/L. I gave her my AMEX Plat. she told me that it didn't count as ID because it wasn't signed. WTF? I try to discourage fraud and they want to make fraud easier to commit...go figure!

I used to put "See ID" but George makes a good point.

I used my card at the USPS one time. They refused to honor payment since card wasn't signed.

Four years of working in retail and hearing one too many horror stories from customers about ID theft has left me to print SEE ID! in large letters in black marker on all my cards. Usually I get asked for ID.

DW put see id. Walmart maybe looks at back of card 1 out of 10 times.

Was told once by one manager that it is company policy to not check signitures because it takes too much time. She called the company and

they said that's not true.

Jewel dosen't always check. Many others don't ask for id.

Target and Bass pro shops are the few that are good at checking.

Jewel will check me if I get a person who is working the CS counter who doesn't recognize me. Going through the grocery line, they never check.

Of course, BofA, Citi, and others than allow for photo on the card make it easy. My BofA check card has photo and sig on front. Never a problem. "Yup that's you."

I sign my cards, but don't think it makes much difference. I use my DHs' card sometimes and they never even look at the name on the card. Sometimes I forget it is his card I am using and I sign my name. Not much protection.

Bottom line is "If you don't sign the card, it's not valid."

Your cardholder agreement doesn't give you the option. It clearly states the card is

not valid if you don't sign it.

Use an unsigned card at your own risk. But don't get pissed if the card is not honored

or is even confiscated. If you don't want to accept the terms of agreement, then

don't accept the card.

I don't sign them - if they want to see ID, I show them my drivers license. Makes no sense to sign the back of the card. If it's lost or stolen, they now have ones signature! How does the signature on the back of the card prove it is or isn't my card? How do they know that it's my signature? They've never seen it before.

if you don't sign them you are not agreeing to the terms set forth in the contract, therefore if your card is stolen and for some reason they recover your card and find out it was not signed, guess who is liable for ALL charges made on the card for not adhering to there end of the contract?

Just thought i would bring that up to you guys, the see id thing is good but sign next to it, so they have something to compare the signature to. (from your drivers license)

I always sign mine, except for one time and that was because of haste in leaving on a trip. I forgot about not signing, and pulled the card out to use. The merchant refused to accept it because it was not signed. I used another card.

Quite often, I will check out using the swipe myself, and the clerk will be alerted to compare signatures because of the amount of the purchase. In 20+ years of using cards, I have never had a problem except for stolen cards one time. That took 5 minutes to alert the companies involved.

Don't you know that you have to sign the receipt ???

When you sign your receipt all they have to do is match the signatures. That's how they know...if they are smart...

I always sign the back of my cards which means I've accepted the agreement that I have with the issuer...and I don't like if they ask me for more proof like ID card, etc...
