Debit-card security plan worries gas pump owners

I am a little confused.

 

If they refused the cards at the pumps, but allow it inside for gas, that is not really a refusal? Just an inconvenience.

 

The honor all card rule was changed in the U.S. because of the wal-mart lawsuit.

 

If you take signature debit cards, you must take all forms rewards, gift cards, prepaid, etc,

 

If you take signature credit cards, you must take all forms rewards, gift cards, prepaid, etc,

 

But merchants can choose

to take signature credit card only or signature debit cards only.

Proper signage is required not just a note on the window

 

Some merchants are not two bright.

They could still take some debit cards that dont go through Visa credit card or Visa interlink system. There are other networks, Star, pulse, Nyce, etc that do not require the upgrades yet.

 

 

My personal opinion.

 

Debit or credit cards should not be use at pay at the pump at all. You should pay inside.

I don't have a DEBIT CARD...but I sure wouldn't use it at a pump

While it might seem to be a minor inconvenience, it is one that may cause customers to go elsewhere. And a customer that goes elsewhere might abandon the location for ALL subsequent purchases.

 

I have many occasions where I want to gas-n-go without going inside the store...an increasing number of stations tend to have problems with the printers outside and it then becomes a choice of not having a receipt or going inside to stand in line and hope that the cashier has a modicum of competence. And if it is raining, I damned sure do NOT want to have to leave from the cover of the pump area.

 

Such issues would be an everyday occurrence for the debit user.

 

While I sympathize with the smaller station owners, they are rightfully concerned about the impact such an 'inconvenience' might have on the patrons at the pumps of what is otherwise supposed to be a CONVENIENCE STORE.

 

That being said, I still do not really know what percentage of the pump-only sales are truly debit-only (although I am not so interested that I want to go research it).

Not gonna' happen

 

PAY-AT-THE-PUMP saves time and money (both for the customer and the gas station)

 

Can you immagine waiting for 5 or 10 minutes to pay for gas

 

"IF" they have pay first...you go inside to give them your credit card after you wait in line

 

Then wait in line again to finalize the sale

 

Are they going to add 3 or 4 registers and 3 or 4 more employees

My debit card never works at the pump. I do not hand it to them. Where I get Gas they dont require you to pay before your pump. When, I go in, I swipe. I would not want them holding my card. So, if it comes to that. They can hold a $20 bill.

I like the superior protections offered and 2% cashback. debit cards are mainly good for merchants.

when I've pulled into gas stations that don't take credit at the pump or have a sign showing the pay at pump is not working I drive to the next station.

 

there was one that required ZIP code but the keypad has a malfunctioning number "4"

 

the merchant was too cheap to fix it.

There are various platforms and processing systems used by the different oil companies. I know of some that do not support debit at the pump. It depends on the model of the pump, the cash register that the station has, and the payment processing system.

 

Many Chevrons that have older (one line green screen attached to FastPay) Gilbarco pumps cannot support pin-debit pay at the pump regardless of what type of cash register they have inside. If they have Wayne pumps then they can support pin-debit at the pump IF they use Chevron's Nucleus Register system but NOT if they use the Gilbarco cash register that comes with the pumps.

 

I have also observed that Tesoro Stations issue card acceptance stickers to their stations with a message that debit cards with a PIN are accepted inside the store, but not at the pump. However, I have found some franchise Tesoro stations that have Gilbarco pumps and Gilbarco cash register to accept debit at the pump. On the other hand the company owned locations that have various pump types and always NCR registers do not process PIN- debit at the pump, only credit.

Here is another thread that is releated. I created it to ask 2fast a question. The article didnt make any sense. Someone told they are required to upgrade thier pumps to accept pin debit cards. That is incorrect you dont have to take pin based debit cards and the credit card companies can not force you to. According to 2fast, Visa is not forcing him to upgrade his pumps. We figured it is either his merchant provider or Shell requiring this. Even if they say no debit cards at the pump, you still should be able to use your debit card at pump provided your debit card has a Mastercard or Visa logo (you wont be able to use it as a pin). As I said in the other thread, someone should tell Nick Siddique it is not true.

If they want the business savings of accepting PIN debit, they need to make sure their pumps are safe.

 

Anyhow, I will be using my penfed card to get 5% off PATP. Unless I am in the middle of nowhere on empty I refuse to fill up someplace without pay at the pump.

 

Price at the pump: $2.52

I pay: $2.39
