When I opened my second Barclay card I was told that I could take some of the limit from my first card and put it on the second to have a higher limit.

If I close one of the cards, can I take the limit and add it to the one I keep open?

Yes. I reallocated last week, and I was given that option.

Yes, but make sure you transfer the limit BEFORE you close the account.

That may have been obvious, but I sure wasn't thinking that.

I would have called and said "I want to close this card....can you please transfer the limit on this account to my other account" or something like that.

But I guess that isn't how it works. (I am still VERY new with credit cards).

So how do I get them to transfer without closing the card yet? Surely they won't let me have a card open with a $0 balance.

I think I must be missing something.

Simply ask them to reallocate the limit from card A to the limit on card B and then close card A.

Barclays will move the limit from A over to B, but will leave A open with a very small limit ($250 in my case) for any pending charges to come through. They set the card to close automatically in a weeks time, or so.

If you want to close the first card and transfer its limit to the second card, just tell them that. But don't say "I want to close card #1" immediately, or that's what they'll do first.

Let's say card #1 has a $1,000 limit and card #2 has a $2,500 limit. Tell them "I'd like to transfer the $1,000 from card #1 to card #2, making it a $3,500 card." Then wait for confirmation that card #2 is now a $3,500 card. Then tell them you'd like to close card #1.

Iactually did this a few years ago with Barclays, and when it reported as closed, it still showed/shows the original limit on my reports, even though that limit had been transferred to card #2.

I know you're smarter than that, but I just wanted to throw this out there because there have been a few "oops" incidents with closing cards before transferring the limit to another one first.

They didn't do that for me! Just closed it that day. But then, this was like 6 years ago, when it was really just Juniper. I like your way better. heh

I know this is an old thread, however; Would it be wise to move the limits to the older card for obvious reasons, then close newest account and then try to do a PC change to the account that you closed?

They PC'd my wifes Apple financing visa to a rewards MC last month, so I guess they've changed their policy maybe?

I'm interested in finding out if it can be accomplished.

I have a 1 1/2 year old Apple visa myself with a 6K limit on it and I just got an NFL Extra points Signature visa for $6k as well.

Call and check first, because they won't PC all cards. The safe move would be to do the PC first and then move the limit.

I guess it doesn't hurt to ask. but I can't PC my Apple visa to a NFL extra points since I already have it.

Would it make that much difference as far as my AAOA if I just move the apple limit to the NFL card and close the apple card? I mean ist only 1 1/2 yrs old

AAOA is open and closed accounts, so no difference.

I just got a new Rewards MC ($2,500) and I also have an iTunes Visa ($2,250). The iTunes was opened in 2007 and is my oldest open CC. I rarely buy anything from iTunes. I would rather have the cash back from the Rewards. I've already combined and closed one card to get the current iTunes limit. Would it make sense to combine again? But I worry about closing my oldest account. Maybe just move all but $500 from the iTunes to the new Rewards?

If you want to keep your old card open, move most of the limit like you said. It might be wise to try and get a CLI on your new card after six months first and then move the limit from your old card as well.

Ok, will do. Already have a reminder set up to ask for a CLI in 6 months. :)

I'm working my own CLI/combining limits strategy right now as well:

Wow, you've put a lot of thought into this. :good: I haven't really thought that much about it yet. Just noticed this thread and it got me thinking.

I'm pretty happy with my limits so far... except that darn $500 Amazon Visa...
