I am going over books that I will require DD to read over the summer (we don't have an official summer reading requirement, unfortunately).

When school starts in the fall, Social Studies will start out with causes of the civil war. Part of that is Uncle Tom's Cabin. (They are not required to read it, just know it's significance in the civil war, and how it helped to further the abolitionist movement.) So, I was thinking of making it one of the books she reads this summer.

However, some more contemporary criticisms is that much of the book created stereotypes.

So I thought I would ask my friends here what your opinions are on the subject. I don't want to make her read something that is controversial or unsuitable. (at the same time, it is worth 32 AR points :swoon:, for those of you that are acquainted with the AR reading system)

have DD read it. It may open up her eyes to things and she may have questions, so be prepared to answer them.

I say allow her to read it, she will be able to determine what she disagrees with or how she thinks things could have been better or worse. Most important it would give her a unique opinion.
