Hi All

Now that I no longer drive and let my drivers license expire, how do I go and acquire a valid form of ID?

I tried to use my expired drivers license to obtain a players card at a casino and they refused to issue me a card because my license was expired. This seems silly because my photo is on the license but I was denied. I have never used anything but state issued drivers license in the past. So what do I do now for proper up to date ID??

Thank you all in advance,

Hi

Thank you for quick reply. My expired license is from PA. I now reside in NJ. So if I go to Nj DMV with say, some utilitity bills, and or cable bills etc. They will issue me a valid state ID? I guess I could call them an ask. LOL. Thank again.

Yeah, DMV issues the non-driver ID cards for those who want/need them for a small fee.

Yeah, on the proof of residence/address...2 or 3 pieces of mail like utility bill, CC bill, wireless svc, etc. [no junk mail] shouldnt be that much of a hassle.

If you do get a state ID, make sure to check out the requirements to reinstate your drivers license. It may make more sense to simply get another drivers license whether you drive or not. Although, you would be required to have insurance if you have a driver's license.

Hi

I doubt you need insurance for DL? Its the registered vehicle you would be insuring. But who knows with the laws and rules today?

Right ace, insurance goes with vehicle ownership, not DL or state ID.

yep...you don't need insurance, also maybe look into getting a U.S. Passport Card - its cheaper than getting an full passport and is ID issued by US government

Huh? What are they insuring? Caseload, what do you do?

The conditions of the judgment says they have to have liability insurance for operating vehicles. :P I'm a probation officer.

And I believe even before that, I'd HEARD of getting liability insurance without a vehicle for the "in case you borrow someone else's car" argument. I could be wrong though.

ETA: I'm by no means saying it's necessary. It's not. But I could have sworn I have heard of it being available before.

Some states require ALL licensed drivers to have at least the minimum liability policy, regardless of whether you OWN a vehicle or not.

O I C

Had no idea. How do they enforce a requirement like that?

Since he is going for a non-DL or state ID this doesnt apply to him correct?

They have to bring valid proof of insurance when they see me. Just like they have to bring their paystubs in to show me they're working. :P

Sorry I wasnt more clear...since the person doesnt drive, I meant like during a police stop on the street. Does a person who shows a non-DL type ID automatically have to pull out proof of insurance? Do they go hand & hand in these states that enforce this like when you are stopped in your car and asked for DL, registration & proof of insurance by the cops?

No. They have to show proof to the probation officer. Not the police. The police don't concern themselves with whether or not a person on probation is in compliance with conditions of supervision unless it involves a new crime.

If the person is not driving, no problems so long as they show their probation officer they are in compliance. If they are NOT in compliance we notify the Courts.

Go to DMV and say you want to get a state id card.

it's called non-DL photo ID or something like this but in case you need to drive again soon why not renew the DL since the DL works just as well as the form of ID for flying, check deposits etc.

State ID may be your best bet. The passport card is a good option too, but since it's less popular you may encounter people who doubt its validity.

NC and SC require proof of insurance to get a DL. SC just wants you to name an insurance company, NC requires an insurance card. NC does issue a special drivers license for those without insurance for use with fleet vehicles only.

Actually, according to the Texas DMV website it looks like ours are called identification certificates (ID for short). :yahoo:

ETA: Before I get called out on that, it's actually the TX DPS (Dept. of Public Safety) not the DMV.

There is a lot more to it than an old ID and several proofs of address. This is the NJ document selector. You must get at least 6 points. I only glanced through it, but I didn't see expired out-of-state license, just current.

Why would there be random police stops walking on the street? In most states unless you are driving the vehicle all you have to tell the police is your name, but no ID required. Even to board an airplane you don't technically need photo ID. If you tell TSA that you have no ID or you lost your ID you will get a secondary inspection but will still be allowed through after they verify you other ways.

Your profile says NYC. In NY if your insurance is canceled they immediately notify the DMV to invalidate the plates. I've never lived in a state that was as linked as NY before. I had already forfeited my NY license so i don't know if NY asks for the license to be forfeited or just the plates themselves.

yes, you can get on a domestic flight without a government ID, you will have to fill out a form and submit to a secondary/wanding and carryon screening

for international flights, you cannot travel without a passport (but DL wouldn't help there anyway)

http://www.tsa.gov/press/happenings/enhanc...quirements.shtm

Beginning Saturday, June 21, 2008 passengers that willfully refuse to provide identification at security checkpoint will be denied access to the secure area of airports. This change will apply exclusively to individuals that simply refuse to provide any identification or assist transportation security officers in ascertaining their identity.

This new procedure will not affect passengers that may have misplaced, lost or otherwise do not have ID but are cooperative with officers. Cooperative passengers without ID may be subjected to additional screening protocols, including enhanced physical screening, enhanced carry-on and/or checked baggage screening, interviews with behavior detection or law enforcement officers and other measures.

more on DL renewals and non-driver photo ID (NY):

http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/license.htm

If your driver license or your learner permit is expired for two years or more, you cannot renew your driver license. There are no exceptions. You must apply for an original license. You must pass the vision test, the written test, and the road test, and complete a pre-licensing course. To apply, use these instructions.

If your driver license is expired for less than two years, use the instructions that appear above to renew your document. If you renew after your driver license expires, the expiration date of your driver license and the renewal fees do not change.

Non-Driver Photo ID Cards

A person of any age who does not have a driver license can apply to the DMV for a non-driver photo ID card. You must provide acceptable proofs of identity and date of birth. You can apply for a non-driver photo ID card if your NYS driver license is suspended or revoked. When you apply for a non-driver photo ID card you must surrender your NYS driver license. There are no exceptions. You do not have to surrender a non-driver photo ID card when you get a driver license or your driver license is reinstated.

A non-driver photo ID card contains the same personal information, photo, signature and special protection against alteration and fraud as a photo driver license. To get more information, read the DMV brochure, Non-Driver Photo IDs -- Secure Proof for Non-Drivers.

Use these instructions to renew a non-driver photo ID card.
