I need to find a lower cost dog for for my almost 2 year old 16 pound Jack Russell terrier. I have him on Eukenuba for small breeds and they just keep on increasing the price. I buy it at petsupplies plus, the cheapest in my area. 16#, the largest size is creeping near to $30.00 (inc tax).

He loves to eat! I give him one cup a day, and sometimes depending on activity, some at night.

Is Purina dog chow bad? I don't want to kill my doggie, but I need to find a cheaper food. I don't want poor quality, I need advice!

I use the Purina for one dog, he likes it.

The other dog, gets really expensive food (shes special). Actually she eats better than me. I just cooked her up a new batch of stew. It has fresh chicken, hamburger, rice, carrots, peas, green beans, and Sodium free chicken broth, with a few hard boiled eggs in it. She gets small portions of this 4-5 times a day along with her dry food.

You might have to play with the type of food.

A lot of cheaper dog food has a ton of corn in it, which can be upsettting to a dog's system.

But even purina makes a value-based Lamb and Rice meal.

good luck!

I buy my dog the chicken soup brand. It's roughly $1 a pound, and is very high quality. I think you want to avoid anything that has any variation of corn in the top ingredients, and anything that has meat by-products instead of just meat or meal (i.e. you want "chicken" or "chicken meal" as opposed to "chicken by-products" or "poultry by-products").

It upsets my dog's stomach when he gets into the Purina at my girlfriend's house.

I think byproducts gets a bad rap honestly. If your dog was eating in the wild....... well, They'd eat more of the animal than just the prime meat.

also, if you're going to switch dog food, don't do it abruptly, which can cause an upset stomach.... you'll want to mix it for awhile and slowly adjust them.

Tons of corn and filler in cheap food thus, it makes them crap more. A better quality food will reduce chances of health problems which results in longer life and fewer vet bills. To me, it's an easy decision what I want for my dog.

As many here are saying if you buy cheap food you are getting tons of crap which adds to health issues in the long run. We buy our dog Wellness, it's an holistic brand and our dog loves it. Check it out here: Wellness brand

I feed my lil CoCo Pop Beneful [i think they are Purina Brand], I buy both the soft food and dry...and stick to Purina treats as well.

I had to learn the hard way when she was a pup not to just buy anything, cause I use to select stuff based on how cute the treat or bag looked and her lil fur face fell off  Took a month for it to all grow back, boy were ppl giving me the side-eye in public.

Soft food cups approx $1.xx

Bag of Dry $11.xx to $20.xx incl tax depending on the size bag

She is 3yrs, 10lbs and her coat and muscles look great!

I was a new furbie mommy at the time.

Vet said you cant just give an animal all sorts of different treats and foods at once, their systems cant take it...so I guess she did have a allergic reaction as a warning for me to stop. I dont know if it could of spouted into something else, worse or death cause I stopped immediately! Threw all that $$$ away by cleaning out her pantry and selected one type/brand of food...If you do need to switch, you have to do it slowly.

But I sure did feel bad looking into her big green eyes for that time period...she always peeked her head out of my purse and ppl always stopped me to ask why my puppy lost its fur on its face. Lesson learned.
