IHOP Threatens To Call The Police Because You Refuse To Show ID With Credit Card.

consumerist.

Can not believe they would call the police for not showing ID.

All the cop would do, is ask for ID. Then show the ID to the Merchant, it happens.

No law requiring me to show ID to a cop either, in Texas I'm only required to tell the officer my name, address and DOB. And I was *NOT* going to show my ID to the officer if he arrived.

Immediately call 1-800-VISA-911. Make sure that horribly-behaving IHOP shapes-up and never asks for ID again.

Never show ID for signed credit cards purchases.

No ID required for signed credit card purchases. Merchants cannot require ID.

If a merchant tries to require ID, immediately call 1-800-VISA-911 to ensure they never do again.

VISA: 1-800-VISA-911

MasterCard: 1-800-300-3069

Also easily report merchant violations online at:

http://www.mastercard.com/us/personal/en/c...violations.html

Check the box that says "Merchant required ID"

Never show ID for signed credit card purchases.

No ID required for signed credit card purchases.

Make sure your community is 100% violation-free. :)

No, I understand the point compeletely. i've witnessed stuff like this b4, and with all

the frustration one encounters by it, I'd have just said to hell with it and paid cash.

I wasn't trying to be flip or anything.

Started posting this the other day but had to run...

Paying with cash is great and all. If you have cash. I'm a plastic only kinda guy, everywhere I go takes plastic, if it doesn't an ATM is usually handy that I can grab $10 or $20 out of without hassle.

CREDIT CARD SIGNATURE IS ALL THE ID NEEDED

When you pay for merchandise with a Visa card, MasterCard, or American Express any store that accepts these cards should accept yours too, no questions asked. It's part of the deal that merchants agree to when they become participating members.

They must check your signature and the card - electronically or by telephone - to be sure it's valid. Once the answer comes up yes, they can go ahead and charge. They can't ask you for any further identification - not a license plate number, Social Security number, proof of address, phone number or picture ID.

Your personal ID isn't needed because Visa, MasterCard, and American Express all guarantee payment on cards that have been properly checked. If the issuer mistakenly authorizes a sale on a bad card, it should make good. MasterCard says that merchants receive instant settlement.

Unfortunately, not all merchants play by the rules. Some, apparently, haven't read them.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

MasterCard wants to hear about merchants who break their rules. Send the name and address and an account of what happened to MasterCard International, c/o Radio City Station, P. O. Box 1288, New York, NY 10101. The merchant's bank will get a stiff letter, ordering it to investigate and bring the offending store into line - or pay a $2,000 fine.

Visa enforces the same rules as MasterCard. "When we hear about a violation, we ask the bank that signed the merchant to get together with the merchant and see that the practice is stopped," Visa representative states. To report a merchant, send a letter to the bank that issued your Visa card.

American Express also prohibits merchants from asking for IDs. "All a merchant is supposed to do is take an imprint, make sure the signature matches and swipe the card through the terminal, to get authorization."

Around where I live, the cops would show up and be pissed at the manager for calling them out because the manager is too stupid to know how to swipe a credit card.

He needs to get one of those self-swipe machines. However, if he is that bad. He would not know if the self-swipe machine may have be tampered with. Sounds like that place needs to go back to cash only or get a different manager.

I am surprised that Ihop corporation does not do anything. Myself, I always wanted to try Ihop pancakes. If I ever do, I will bring cash and I will refuse to give my drivers license mainly because I am not going to use a card. The closest Ihop is 45 minutes away from my location.

Watch out... if you don't give a license the guy might call the cops thinking you're passing counterfeit bills!

IHOP had a discrimination allegation against them a while ago when they seemingly required minority customers to have their driver's license put on impound while dining.

Immediately call the police if this ever happens again.

Because he is probably one of those fools who likes to keep police busy with inconsequential things so that they can't take care of real problems like robberies, shootings, etc.

He probably also calls 9-1-1 if the cashier doesn't give him the proper change...

Nah, that would be an FBI issue *LOL*

if you don't want to show ID...don't....refuse...if they refuse to accept the credit card without ID, then walk away...VERY simple solution....there's no sense making some cashier's life miserable

save that for the CAs in the world....THEY deserve it

If you read this forum regularly, you'd think some people's sole purpose in life is to crusade for the Credit Card ID policy...

They may as well just don some chainmail, a smock with a blue cross on it and be following Charlemagne...

If I'm reading his post correctly, I think he's commenting on the policy of requiring minorities only to leave their ID at the counter to get service, even if they pay in cash. Ostensibly to keep minorities from doing the ol' "dine & dash" thing... as if they're the only ones that ever do that.

yeah...that is obviously wrong. But I still wouldn't call the police. What are they going to be able to do?

However, I WOULD call my attorney, the local media, the ACLU and anyone else I could think of.

I'm not sure what the police could do themselves, other than be a credible documentation service for the next call to the local DA or state AG, or whomever.

right...but that's not a police matter...but rather a civil one...I was commenting on his suggestion to call the police, rather than on the alleged discriminatory policy

again...WHY call the police?

Why not call the ASPCA? They have as much say as the police for this matter
