On March 7 I mailed in an application for a JCB Marukai Premium card for its 3% cash-back potential. As of today there still hasn't been an inquiry on any of my reports.

Honestly I don't care if I get this card or not, thanks to the success of my recent spree, but it has me wondering if the app has been misplaced...

Anyone else apply by mail (there is no online option)? If so, what was your experience? How long did it take to hear back (either way)?

FWIW, I am a resident of one of the states where the product is available, and I copied and pasted the mailing address from an email I received from JCB customer service to MS Word/the envelope I used to mail the app...

Ha! They pulled TU sometime yesterday. I will watch my mailbox for a gaudy new card or a denial letter and post an update on this low-interest topic. :P

I finally heard from JCB via US Mail yesterday. Despite my 765 credit score (from their letter) they were unable to approve me with additional documentation.

Reasons:

- Unable to verify income

- Unable to verify residence

- Unable to verify home phone number

- Unable to verify SSN

Funny, all of the last three items could be verified with the credit report they already had in their hands... Oh well, I'll mail them what they've requested and I should have a beautiful(!) new JCB card, to my delight and to the confusion of future store clerks everywhere.

I'll verify once I have the thing in my hot little hands.

What exactly did they request?

Pay stub (for income)

Utility bill (for residence)

Home phone (type of proof required not specified - I sent a screenshot from my VOIP account and a payment confirmation for the service from my CC bill)

SSN (type of proof required not specified - I sent a copy of my SS card)

I've had my JCB card from just after they started issuing them in California. Quite a while. From what I recall, I mailed them an app and a short time later got the card. No additional docs.

Last year I opened a checking account online with a local bank. I got a letter in the mail saying, "Sorry, we can't issue you an account. Thanks for considering us." No explanation, no nothing. The letter looked like that was their final decision. I decided to call them and they said, "Oh, we just need you to go into a branch to verify your identity." That I did, and they opened the account. I wonder why they just didn't tell me that in the first place. They probably lost other potential customers be doing this.

Interesting. The way the JCB denial letter started I was definitely wondering what the ^*% the problem was, since it starts with a denial and then lists the conditions for approval (submitting the documentation requested).

Originally I didn't read the entire letter, just the denial part... They also inadvertently included someone else's credit score disclosure, which showed scores of 627 and 661. My heart sank when I saw the denial and then the scores... and then noticed the mistake on the score letter, AND the conditions of the "denial". :)

I'll give up if what I sent wasn't suitable. I did consider applying in-store at the Marukai location in San Diego, but it's 30 miles from home and I am not in that neighborhood very often. An in-person app may have yielded different results.

cv91915, did you ever get a response to your JCB application after proving your identity?

Not exactly. I mailed the requested documentation on the 29th, the day after I received the letter. It should have gone from San Diego to LA in two business days, max. I emailed JCB customer service two days ago to make sure they got everything they asked for, and they indicated that they had not yet received my envelope.

This is a very long, manual process. I sure hope it is worth it...

DENIED!

After getting the denial/conditional approval letter noting my 761 TU score, and sending in a big pile of requested documentation, I received a denial letter again yesterday because they could not pull Experian (it's frozen).

I'm really bitter. As much as I wanted this card for the 3% on general purchases (after spending a few thousand) I don't think I have the energy to continue to pursue this, unfreeze Experian and restart the process. Who knows what they'd want next.

For now they can keep their ^*%%&^^() credit card. What a truly awful customer experience.
