It's just all so confusing. When you go to "join now," it says you have to have a sponsor and they have to be a member. But people here are saying the person you're eligible through doesn't have to be a member. Which is it?

The family member just has to be in the military, not necessarily a member of NFCU.

Their online app is for the more simple situations- I think for yours it would be necessary to go to a branch in person or call them. I really don't think you'd have a problem getting in if you could get a hold of your stepdad's DD-214. Has your mom re-married? If she doesn't already have his DD-214, she can request a copy of it at http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/ as long as she hasn't remarried.

If nothing else, call them and ask them about your situation- they were extremely patient and friendly answering all of my questions

If you get with the VA and have disability, from service connected injuries, which I know there is at-least 10% in your 7 years lol, you will qualify for membership. I had doubts from reading these forums and went to a branch to verify that info with the manager and security department. All they asked was, was I receiving compensation and did I have access to medical care from the VA. They copied my VA ID and happily welcomed me to the CU.

I'm glad you were able to get in, but just to be clear, the only way to be eligible if you were medically discharged, is if you are medically retired. Medically discharged would no longer have a Military ID (Not VA ID) and medically retired do, which means that you still have access to a military base and therefore would be eligible for membership.

Yes, 'step' family members are eligible as immediate family members.

No, you don't necessarily have to bring all of that paperwork (family's DD214, SSN, birth certificate) unless the membership and/or security are requesting it. All that is needed to Apply for membership is your name, ssn, DOB, address, Gov't issued ID# (we ask for this on the phone as well), and other questions to verify your identity.

Yes, we pull a credit report for those who are over 18 for membership and it has no bearing on whether or not you are approved for membership.

They do not use CHEX to open a checking account.

For minors (should you want to open accounts for your kids) all that is needed is their SSN and yourself as a joint owner.

No, not everyone is eligible for membership.

I hope this answers some of the questions that I have seen on here before.

Well I wish the CU had the same information across the board. This discrepancy might be a problem for me if most of my family wasn't retired military, but I was told this in person at the branch that opened my accounts. I also was not retired, I receive benefits from the VA. Is there no clear direction from the Board as to this subject? Should I be concerned enough to go higher up with the CU and explain my eligibility under other family members?

I wouldn't worry about them asking about your eligibility. And if they do, you have another legitimate way in with your family.

We do have they same information across the board. The branch should have reviewed the eligibility requirements which we have access to which help us when we have questions about membership.

Unfortunately, mistakes can be made. And believe me it can be confusing for all when it comes to who is eligible and who is not re: medical discharge vs medically retired. Asking the right questions can help with this, but we have so much information that we need to know, it can sometimes be overlooked.

Thank you AS for all your information here.

My mom says she does have the DD-214 somewhere. I don't really have a branch near me, so I'm hoping it will be possible to join over the phone with all of his identifying information. How, though, do I prove that I am (was?) actually related to him? He didn't adopt me or anything. He was my mom's second husband, and they married when I was an adult. My mom has not remarried, BTW.

Thanks for this, BTW. I will call. I probably won't join for a few months since I already have 2 inqs sitting on my EQ report and have opened 4 bank/CU accounts in the last 6 months or so. Although AS says they don't run Chex, so...

Just signed up for Navy based on my retired grandfather's eligibility. He was NOT a member. I signed up in person to verify everything. They wanted to see copies of his military ID card, my mother's birth certificate and my birth certificate to prove lineage. Thanks to CB I had all that with me! Now to see if I get the credit card approval...

My dad served in the Navy(but did not retire from the Navy and is not currently in the Navy) Would I be eligible for membership based on this?

2nd scenario: My dad applied for a teaching job with the DoD. If he gets the job, would I be eligible?

Thanks!

If he works on a military installation yes you would qualify through him.

ok so that's assuming he gets the DoD job, but regarding his previous service in the Navy, that doesn't qualify me, correct?

Ok, I will bite..

In regards to NFCU: My biological father, same last name as myself and born 1946, served and climbed rank in the USMC circa Vietnam war. Bona fide recipient of Purple Heart; received, or did receive, some type of pension from foot injury as Radio Operator that earned him said Purple Heart. Of course, he was honorably discharged.

Am I eligible?

From my understanding no you are not eligible. He has to have retired from the military not been discharged.

:( Hmmm. I just checked. Both ol' Semper Fidelis (my father) as well as grandfather (WW2, in a unit behind Patton's advance, he was a truck driver there, deceased............) were honorably discharged.

Soo, just to be clear.. Honorably discharged upon completion of signed-up tours of duty = not eligible for NFCU?

(Leaving out the whole Marines/Army for Navy FCU thing. The serious question is above. Thank you)

:offtopic: If so, then this ELFCU admission yesterday, for me, is a double godsend.

OK, so I applied over the phone and the woman said yes, I am eligible through my late stepdad. She opened a membership for me (gave me an access number). EQ was softed. But she didn't ask me for an initial deposit or any information on my stepdad. I've read through everything and still can't quite figure out what happens next. She said they'd be sending a paper application (so I still have to apply, I'm not really a member yet?), is that when they will ask about my stepdad? What kind of information will they ask for? Will I need an actual copy of his DD-214, or just the information from it? Will I have to prove I'm related to my mom, and that she was married to him? If I have to ask my mom for her birth certificate and their marriage certificate, she'll probably smack me. blush2.gif

Any help is much appreciated.

With all the horror stories of NFCU retroactively ousting people, I would be real sweet to mom, and badger her mercilessly till she joined.

ohmy.gif Really? But I thought I was legitimately eligible as his stepdaughter! I'm not?

You ARE eligible, but when the security department picks you to verify eligibility, it's MUCH easier to just point to mom, who has an account.
