Exposing an address or a driver's license number is completely unacceptable for making a purchase that has no need for that information. A $10 transaction does not need personal information to be exposed, and a $5000 transaction does not either. Who would want to become a target of BURGLARY because an ID check allowed a CRIMINAL to know exactly where thousands of dollars of high end goods would be taken after purchase?

States have stepped up to keep account numbers and expiration dates off of receipts, for good reason. That information does not enhance the function of a receipt, and is wholly unnecessary. Information should be kept private except when necessary. This is security 101, folks.

My address or driver's license number are not relevant to a credit card purchase and have no reason to become a part of it.

Never show ID for credit card purchases.

No ID required for credit card purchases. Merchants cannot require ID.

If a merchant tries to require ID, immediately call 1-800-VISA-911 to ensure they never do again.

VISA: 1-800-VISA-911

MasterCard: 1-800-300-3069

Also easily report merchant violations online:

Check the box that says "Merchant required ID"

Never show ID for credit card purchases.

No ID required for credit card purchases.

In one instance the store security person threatened to call the police since the card must have been stolen if I was refusing to show ID.

I HAVE THE CREDIT CARD POLICY FOR MY SIDE OF THE STORY...WHAT DOES THE STORE HAVE...OTHER THAN STUPIDITY???

That is one reason, I started showing ID. I dont have the time to deal with the merchant or the police.

Just because merchant ask for ID it is not stupid. The same goes for people who believe ID should be shown.

You can disagree with them, but do not call them stupid.

That is not the only reason I show ID. I can understand the views for and against showing id.

My driver's license is a LICENSE TO DRIVE A CAR/TRUCK not a credit card use permit

My license was signed almost 20 years ago (US MAIL RENEWAL)

What is more accurate...the signature on the back of the card that was signed in the

past 3 years or one that was signed almost 20 years ago

:D

Why is asking for ID not stupid???

Doing a STUPID act does not always make one STUPID

YMMV

I basically wrote this to a gas station corporate that it is not acceptable to force me to show my private information to some minimum wage dirt bag with possible priors and have received less background checks than government officials.

"I was told by your cashier that identification is REQUIRED for purchasing items in your station "because we've been having problems with fraud with credit cards".

Regardless of what your personal philosophical view, credit card policies upholds your policies over treatment of cardholders it is specifically states that mandatory ID checking is prohibited.

"Those minimum wage cashiers of yours are not given the same level of background check as other personnel like bankers and police officers, are they? I'm more concerned that your employees could be scoping out customers' vehicle for target and memorizing address from "checking ID" to plan a crime against their property. Your concerns about fraudulent purchase of milk and cookies do not overrule the VISA & MC policies and if you don't like the policies, you have no business accepting credit cards.

VISA/MasterCard regulations cited.

http://www.mastercard.com/us/merchant/pdf/..._Rules_5_08.pdf

5.6.3.

"A Merchant must not refuse to complete a Transaction solely because a

Cardholder who has complied with the conditions for presentment of a Card at

the POI refuses to provide additional identification information, except as

specifically permitted or required by the Standards."

http://usa.visa.com/download/merchants/rul...a_merchants.pdf

p.29

Although Visa

rules do not preclude merchants from asking for cardholder ID, merchants

cannot make an ID a condition of acceptance. Therefore, merchants cannot

refuse to complete a purchase transaction because a cardholder refuses to

provide ID. Visa believes merchants should not ask for ID as part of their

regular card acceptance procedures.

AMEX rule cites that merchants are not to

"impose any restrictions, conditions, or disadvantages when the Card is accepted that are not imposed equally on all Other Payment Products, except for ACH funds transfer, cash, and checks", therefore if the station in question was to be in complaince with VISA/MC rules, requiring identification on AMEX would be an unfavorable treatment against AMEX users.

I'm having trouble with understanding part of this and I'd re-word the third part:

Regardless of the personal philosophical view of your company or your employee, your company is legally bound to follow the rules surrounding the credit card acceptance contract entered into specifically those stating that mandatory ID checking is prohibited.

You may also wish to let them know of Visa's $5,000 fine for non-compliance. Not that anyone takes that seriously, until they get a notice that they've been fined.

Violations of Visa’s Operating Regulations result in fines of no less than $5,000 for the first incident. By requiring ID, your location is in violation of Visa Operating Regulations and is subject to the schedule of fines presented in Section 1.7.D.1 (Page 17 or PDF File Page 61) of this document: http://usa.visa.com/download/merchants/vis...regulations.pdf

Basically, my message was they don't trust their customers and I don't trust their scumbag employees.

VISA and the issuer will throw the ball back and forth at each other and who knows whether they'll do anything about the violation.

Something (somethings is more accurace) is done about ALL of the violations that I report. I am very aggressive with these violations, especially in the past year or so as I have come across fewer and fewer violations since I have reported so dang many merchants in my immediate area so I am rarely asked for ID though I seem to have some problems out of town and the occassional new problem merchant in town who gets their idea to start IDing for credit card use. I keep records on the violations such as when I filed the report, who I filed it with, what documentation I contributed to the report if any, etc.

I just don't have any patience for these merchants who are unnecessarily invading my privacy, wasting my time, and violating their card acceptance agreement. What other agreements may they decide to violate if they violate this one? Do they follow the health code? Will they honor a warranty they have extended to me on a product? Is that gas they are selling REALLY 87 octane as they advertise it? etc...

The problem is when a merchant is knowingly violating one contract with some entity, it is possible they are violating other contracts...

I reported several stores a few times. Nothing was done. I gave up, plus after hearing articles of people getting arrested for not showing id (I am not talking about showing it to a cop either). I will gladdy show my ID B)

Fraud still happened to me, without showing an ID.

On that article, even with No ID., people can still find you address info. It is not that hard. Epsecially if you are listed in the phone book or you can even find out searching google. You have your name on the card.

Why should they blindly trust their customers? And if their employees are scumbags, why do you shop there?

No doubt, but that's still a poor excuse to just give them the information. At least make them work for it.

That is debatable and it depends on the state.

George already mentioned not being required to carry ID, but you are not required to have government ID, either. You don't have to have an SS number and you don't have to have a DL or a state ID.

Maybe on the DL or State ID.

You are required to get a social security number or tax payer id. The parents are required to get Social Security within a few weeks of their kids being born.

Only "IF" you have income and pay taxes or get a refund of any kind

In the case of newborns...it is so you can "CLAIM THEM" on your 1040

I assume you could just not claim them...
