Just got this today. Signed up for the government DUNS number last night.

The assignment of your D&B DUNS Number has been completed. Your D&B DUNS Number is 9999999. This number will become active in our system tomorrow morning. If you have any questions please contact D&B at 1-866-705-5711

Now I can go work on getting that grant. Never had to verify anything. I think that's proof that all this other mess is a sham to sell a service that no one really needs, unless they're in a big big hurry to establish credit.

What a crock!

I have this strong urge to say a bad word.

I don't think there's anything special about contracting with the government, it's just that they can't mess with those people. Your ordinary small business, they can play with, keep telling you something is wrong, please call to verify....., threaten to delete the information if you don't buy, tell you your number won't be active, creditors can't access it etc etc.

I think it's all a sham.

Breeze,

I am glad you finally got your number. I would have said a few bad words. LOL It's a ridiculous that it took this long for you to get a Duns number. They are making so much money by scaring owners into buying credit builder. It's not funny. Hopefully one day someone will give them a taste of their own medicine. If I remember correctly we got our number by email within a couple of days of applying. That was over 4 years ago.

Good luck with your grant application.

Thanks! I suggest everyone who wants a DUNS number consider getting some kind of government grant or contract, and use that internet signup to get the number from D&B.

Obviously, their small business website is designed to be a trap for small business customers who don't know any better.

Only thing about a government d&b number is... you have to verify that you will use it for some sort of government contract or something similar. Its not advised that everyone go out and "get one". If you do plan on doing contracts with the government or applying for grants then yes... get one but if its just to get one faster.. i wouldnt do it. I think it will get you in some trouble down the way. :D

Breeze congratulations on finally getting a number!!! WOOHOOO

Why do you say that? I don't think it's the case.

I don't see anything that restricts the use of this site for obtaining the DUNS number. There are no penalties or restrictions that I can see either on the government site or the DNB site. If a company already has a DUNS number, they can use it to become a government contractor. Apparently there is no difference in the numbers.

If someone has information from either the government or DNB that says otherwise, let us know.

How do I get a DUNS Number?

The Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number is a unique nine character identification number provided by the commercial company Dun & Bradstreet (D&:). Call D&B at 866-705-5711 if you do not have a DUNS number. The process to request a DUNS number takes about 10 minutes and is free of charge. Please view these instructions for obtaining your DUNS Number.

If you already have a DUNS number, the D&B representative will advise you over the phone. You must have a different 9 digit DUNS for each physical location/different address in your company as well as each legal division that may be co-located. When entering your DUNS number, enter only the numbers; do not include dashes. As a result of obtaining a DUNS number you might be included on D&B's marketing list that is sold to other companies. If you do not want your name/company included on this marketing list D&B has asked that you contact them, anytime, at the same numbers noted above to request they be removed.

I got my DUNS today as well. Yipee!!!!!

The rep answered on the first ring. It was a 5 to 7 minute call. She was very congenial. No $718. No "Nothing's free." No "It'll cost you $99 to get your number right now." It seemed like a completely different company.

I got my DUNS by saying that I wanted to apply for government grants. To be completely truthful, I'll apply for some type of grant.

OK I have already had my DUNS number for some time now. I applied for the government DUNS and now I have 2? How does Staples, Viking, Nebs, UPS etc report to my new DUNS #? I received the same e-mail that my Gov DUNS is active the next morning?

I have no clue now how or if my current TL's will report to my new number? Any help or encouragement?

You didn't need a second DUNS number to deal with the government, you could have used the old one. I think I would try to get rid of one of them. Say you made a mistake, you thought there was a special number for dealing with the government. There isn't. You jmust have to have a DUNS number to deal with the government.
