I think this is not a good topic for the board because we don't discuss every other manufacturer rebate/incentives. All this is a marketing ploy. They took the $4500 rebate away on a Grand Cherokee and made it $1000 and the gas...well this saves Chrysler money because even if you paid $4 per gallon and they paid the buck a gallon it's still less than $4500. So, it should just be looked as another rebate or a sad attempt at highlighting a promotion.

That's based upon 12.000 miles a year driving. Only 87 gas or E85.

let's say you get horrible gas mileage at 15 miles a gallon. You would buy 800 gallons of gas in one year. Locked in at $2.99 (do they add the 9/10ths?), you may save up to $1.50 a gallon if gas does indeed go up to $4.50 like some predict.

800 X 2.999 = $2,399.20

800 X 4.509 = $3,607.2

YOU SAVE $1,208. For three years it would be $3,624. Barely break-even on the difference in rebates. And that assumes gas become $4.50 a gallon TODAY and STAYS $4.50 for the next 3 years.

What about the $3,500 difference in finance savings? In the first year of a 60 month loan at 5.9% it would result in an opportunity cost of $206.50. A little less for the next year, and a little less for the next. About $500 bucks sounds right.

Also, forgot to mention that if you get better gas mileage, you reap less reward. What happens if a Democrat becomes president and gas prices come back down? Then there would be NO benefit.

The amount of gas they will subsidize is based on 12,000 miles per year divided by the vehicle's EPA mpg rating. No matter what actual mileage you get.

It's not a lot of money. The promotion is based on people's perception that gas is very expensive.

It's probably an unpopular opinion, but I find most peoples perception of gas prices to be hysterical. I must admit I do not feel it much as I get great gas mileage and do not HAVE to drive very much. If the price if gas rises a whole $1 a gallon, that's probably only an extra $20 a month to me. Double that and you get what it would cost if I drove an "average" or typical amount of miles. IMHO, not much to get completely hysterical about. It sucks for sure, but some people act like it's going to cause millions of people to go bankrupt and homeless. Or something, I am not sure.

I read articles about people taking several thousand dollar hits to get out of "gas-guzzlers" to "'save" money on gas. The perception is that gas is the #1 expense, can not be controlled in any way, and is just running away. Surely saving $1 on gas is worth Thousands of dollars a year, or apparently thats what many people think.

really depends on how you look at it, I have to fill up my tank every 4 days. Cost me 56$ currently to fill up the tank, my friend who just recently bought a Acura TL-S gets 17mpg and has to fill up every 4 days as well. I drive probably about 11000 miles a year depending on how frequent i go to vegas. Gas is really hitting my budget hard, now that the price has increased. I remember when gas was only 1.80/gallon ;)

The cost of gas doesn't make me hysterical either, I traded my SUV for a small sedan 5 years ago; it's the fact that everything is linked to the price of petroleum, so even if you take the bus, but you'll still feel it when food & goods prices jump 5%-35% in a year. This is devastating to those millions of people around the world who spend 50%+ of their income on food.

Unfortunately, these gas prices are what is needed to make people aware that WE all must change our habits. People can blame the government or China, but for decades we've had choices and opted for gas guzzlers by a huge percentage. 5% of the world's population can't use 25% of the available resources forever.

I'm surprised at the political content of some of these post given our zero tolerance policy for political content.
