OFF TOPIC - How to Get VIN number from previously owned car???

I am trying to get the VIN number from a car we previously owned . It was purchased in 9/97 and traded in on another vehicle in 4/99. It was financed through FMC and I have the old account # however, they say that the records don't go back that far and I need a VIN number to get information about the account. I have called my Insurance Carrier with no luck, the Dept of Motor Vehicle no luck and have searched high and low in old papers can't find it. Does anyone have any suggestions???

 

We have money being held in the State's unclaimed property division (refund from extended warrant) and in order for us to get it, we have to get a "no interest" letter from FMC.

 

Help !! Anyone have any suggestions!

You've exhausted two out of three of my ideas. Last one was suggested on the boards last week: place where you had the oil changed. Someone said they kept the VIN# in the computer.

I was going to say check your old insurance cards/papers but it looks like you have done that. Is there an old auto loan that you can cross reference it with? Good luck in your search.

some lenders will place the vin # on the TL on your credit report. check that out.

I've checked all the credit bureas and they don't have VIN #, called FMC where loan was thru no luck (even gave them the account #), contacted the dealer where we bought the vehicle and had the oil changed no luck there either. Everyone says it is too old. I personally can't believe that FMC can't get the VIN # through the old account number. I might just have to talk with someone higher up in the company.

Ok, here's the deal, I had unclaimed property in FL. They wanted anything with an old business addy on it. I didn't have a thing...went back to 1991.

 

 

 

I contacted the unclaimed property site and we made other arrangements, ie. affidavit. They can not possibly want Ford involved here because Ford is the one who turned the money over to them.

My daughter has just gone through the frustraton you are experiencing. I suggested that she contact the dealership where she purchased the car, and they had the VIN in their records. Hers was from 2001. It's worth a shot.

Don't know if this tried this...

 

Not just oil changes, ANY service done...Eg: new tires, brakes, windsheild replacment, etc...

You said you called the dealer you bought the car from, have you called the dealer you traded it into? (assuming it's not the same dealer)

Last I can think of is the tax collector of your town/city...

Worst case, call a private investigator. They have access to services such as ACCURINT.COM which maintains a database of all sort of info, some of which includes all past and present vehicles registered to people (not for every state though). I used to have access to this database but no longer do unfortunately, or I'd offer to help.
