So... you refuse to sign your credit card...

YET YOU SIGN YOUR CHECKS??

The check you sign is possibly passed through multiple hands and it is way easier to lift a signature off a check than it is to lift one off a credit card (even if you had the card long enough to copy/scan it).

And before someone posts that they sign the check because it is not valid unless it is signed... so is your credit card! They print "VOID IF NOT SIGNED" or "NOT VALID UNLESS SIGNED" on the back.

Yup...and unless your LEGAL NAME is "CID" or "PLEASE SEE IDENTIFICATION", then writing that in the card's signature box DOES NOT MAKE IT VALID! Do you also sign your CC slips with "CID" or "PLEASE SEE IDENTIFICATION" to match the "signature" on the card? THINK, PEOPLE...THINK!!!

Ok "George," I think that has been made clear.

like I said, I sign my cards. Your response is useless.

I wasn't speaking directly to you. I know you sign your cards, as you have made abundantly clear. I was referring to people who put "CID" or "PLEASE SEE IDENTIFICATION" on their CCs instead of their actual signature.

BTW, my response was not useless...well, maybe useless to YOU, but not to everyone...

I have seen salamanders write "See ID" on the back of a Visa/AmEx Gift Card that is NOT personalized with their name on it.

What good does checking ID do when you can't compare a name or a signature?!

Some people don't even sign them... but usually it's because they overlooked it and if they just sign it right then it is fine.

By the way, Visa Gift Cards have the same zero-liability for fraud ... however the issuers of them will charge like $10 to replace the lost/stolen card.

Speaking of straw men. Where has anyone here ever said they write check ID on their cards to prevent someone from stealing their signature?

Some thieves are smart. Rather than take the whole purse they just take one credit card... and then the person may not notice their card was stolen for a couple days.

I once found a wallet on the ground when I was a kid... it had a driver's license, and like a health insurance card, SS card, some pictures and even like 50 bucks cash! But no credit cards. Anyway, what we did was mail it back to the guy (address on license) Express Mail and just took out 15 bucks from his wallet to cover that... win-win situation (cost us no money, he got the wallet back).

My Cards are signed and say See ID on the back also. NOT in the signature area though. Why you ask?

Because it's an extra verification step I prefer they take when someone uses my CC.

Yes, people can get Fake IDs, but some jack who got my CC out of my wallet and made it to a store before I noticed it was gone and cancelled it? They aren't gonna have a fake ID that will work in the state of florida.

A cashier may think it's a hassle, but it's less of a hassle than the paperwork generated for management when a chargeback occurs.

Besides....when the thief walks out of the store with merchandise and the CC has a 0 liability for the card holder....who do you think eats the charge?

That's right...the business. Now they have no merchandise and no payment to show for it. There goes profits.....

Just my 2 cents :clapping:

If your card is signed, even if you write "See ID" on it stores don't have to check ID. If the signatures march they are covered and you are always covered with zero-liability.

Store only takes loss if the signature is not a resonable match. Even if the customer shows ID, if the signature is not a reasonable match the store can end up having to take the loss.

Some people have a higher sense of social responsibility and care about what goes on beyond their monthly credit card statement. Is that a bad thing?

Where I worked we needed ID on a check if you wrote one for a dollar... but never ID on a signed credit card (even if you were buying like hundreds of dollars in merchandise)

CHECKS = MONEY

CREDIT CARDS != MONEY

HOW IS IT RELEVANT? I DON'T KNOW! I DON'T SIGN MY MONEY, BUT I SIGN MY CHECKS!

Saying that a check is money but a credit card isn't is wrong.

A check is basically just a piece of paper that you write saying that you authorize your bank to pay $XXX to _______ from your account.

Just like a credit card means the bank pays the merchant and then you pay the bank.

In economic terms, checks are money. They fall under the following definition from the Fed:

"The Federal Reserve publishes weekly and monthly data on three money supply measures -- M1, M2, and M3 -- as well as data on the total amount of debt of the nonfinancial sectors of the U.S. The money supply measures reflect the different degrees of liquidity -- or spendability - that different types of money have. The narrowest measure, M1, is restricted to the most liquid forms of money; it consists of currency in the hands of the public; travelers checks; demand deposits, and other deposits against which checks can be written. M2 includes M1, plus savings accounts, time deposits of under $100,000, and balances in retail money market mutual funds. M3 includes M2 plus large-denomination ($100,000 or more) time deposits, balances in institutional money funds, repurchase liabilities issued by depository institutions, and Eurodollars held by U.S. residents at foreign branches of U.S. banks and at all banks in the United Kingdom and Canada."
