The United States Postal Service will not accept a card that says "See ID" or "CID" or has a blank signature strip unless you present a photo ID and sign it in front of them. They seem to be one of the few merchants who properly follow the Visa/MC policy for a card that does not have a valid signature.

A story about that is here: http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/comments/creditcard.html

My local post office has a little sign that says credit cards that are not validly signed can't be accepted, and that unless the customer signs the card they will not be able to use it.

If only all merchants were as good as the USPS. (By the way, the USPS does not add surcharges or have minimums/maximums either. If you wanted to buy a single 39 cent stamp on a credit card they would have no problem with it -- heck if you wanted to buy a single 2 cent stamp they won't have a problem.)

WHY WOULD THE CREDIT CARD COMPANIES PRINT "VOID IF NOT SIGNED" IF THEY DIDN'T INTEND ON YOU SIGNING YOUR NAME???

Do you really think they just did it to waste INK???

I'm waiting till some day somebody is on the 6:00 NEWS charged with some

crime and their name is--->CID or SEE ID or SEE LICENSE

THEY THEY WERE SO INTO THE BAHHHH SHEEP LIFE that they had their name LEGALLY changed...

If my name was "Chris Igor Dotson" and I signed my card "CID" ... I wonder how legitimate that would be...

DOES IT SAY ONLY USE INITIALS???

Or does it say SIGN YOUR NAME???

If that were your standard legal signature, it would be fine.

Side note: We just had a little love-fest going here, didn't we?

PS #2: Most every post office I've ever been in also has the same sign.

Addendum #3: Even IF credit card fees were substantial enough to cause a business to go under (not saying they are, just making a point), the post office would be a bad example. They're backed up by your tax dollars and they know they're never going out of business no matter what happens... ever. That's why they could care less if you only buy a 2 cent stamp.

This is true, but the post office actually makes a net profit for the government. If that were to fail to be the case at some point, you can be sure there would be some political repercussions.

I bought a sheet of $0.02 stamps when I did a CERTIFIED R/R

I wouldn't ever do a $0.02 purchase on purpose

Their tank? That's kinda funny, actually.

Right. Technically, they are set up to be self-sufficient, and they are expected to be self-sufficient, and they tout that whenever they get the chance, but you know they should they ever lose money that something would be done to either tide them over or outright bail them out. Government institutions have a very poor history of closing their doors.

The USPS is not entirely a government organization. They were kind of privatized a while back. USPS could go out of business if enough people stopped using them and went to the competition (DHL, FedEx, UPS).

Myself I have never done a 2 cent purchase either. When I did need to get small-value stamps (when 1 oz first-class went from 37 to 39 cents) I went to the post office and just paid exact change in coinage (like 40 cents).

On paper.

You don't really believe that, do you?

Yes I do believe that.

The USPS is not the only way to send mail or a package (unless you are sending it to a P.O. Box).

If someone wanted to, they could send all their stuff FedEx, DHL, or UPS.

Name the last U.S. government entity that was completely shut down and ceased to exist?
