One apon a time I had a CU that gave me a credit/debit card. They charged me to use it as a debit card so I had to use it as a credit card. (It was a MC logo) I would go to Wally world and grab some stuff and go to the register and after I put in my information it would say on the register "Please See ID" okay, maybe it didn't say that, but that's what whoever cashier was there would tell me. Now really, since I already had my wallet open and you could plainly see my ID right there it wasn't a big deal to point it towards her and have her check the signatures. I have my wallet open because I don't put away my card till the transaction is done. I have had times where the card didn't go through and they had to re-do the swipe.

Someone said something like they thought that the government should pass a law stating that everyone should be required to show ID if using a CC. And someone else said that the government doesn't have the authority to go into personal businesses like that. My question is how come the government can't do that, but they can pass laws on bankruptcy? (which have everything to do with credit card companies?)

So, it is ok for the government to tell the credit card company that I don't have to pay them through federal bankruptcy laws, but it isn't ok for them to make a law that stores must check my ID with a credit card purchase?

Because what you propose is exactly why we should check government involvment too much. While there certainly is precedent for them sticking their nose in what should remain private matters, it's not in our best interests either to become too dependent on them micro-managing our lives, lest it move from what really is a consumer protection to what they think is a consumer protection.

There is the occasional issue that I think needs addressing, but for the most part it's better for us in the long run to let people and businesses run their own lives.

We got shut down one time for talking aobut IDs and gov, so I hope this isn't "political", but inspiringmind, there are lots of people who think that's a great idea. In fact I believe the REAL ID act has passed congress. I can't speak knowledgeably about it as I haven't done enough research.

No common law country has ever had a national ID. That will probably change. I don't think there are enough cranky people like me to resist it.

I have learned to try not to be too political because no one agrees. Alright, maybe a few would...lol My state doesn't want to do REAL ID. I haven't come to a conclusion about it yet. I would think that maybe I would not have a problem showing the things they would need to get a real ID. I own a house, I have utility bills. But would it be difficult? IDK

The problem, green, is many people just go along with whatever they are told to do. People are afraid to stand up for what is right. This is too bad. I'll continue to go along, kicking and screaming, at the back of the line, the entire way there.

I just don't have a whole lot of faith in the gov't's ability to keep large databases of information safe and free from abuse.

Private corporations have been shown to be better?

Just for information. A lot states have or will refused to do Real id. It is cost prohibitive. However, this may not be a problem if the U.S. gets the passcard. The passcard can be used for land, sea travel between Canada, U.S., Mexico and possible the Caribbean.

Some states close to the boarders may have drivers license that meat the Passcard standards. So this should also work as a real id. Both will have databases.

Since, the Passcard is issued by Federal Government it should not cost the states any money.

Just for info. Your card can still be used as pin purchase as well as a signature purchase.

In the U.S. debit cards can be used at least two ways

Signature transactions*

Pin transactions**

*Signature transactions must have the Visa, Mastercard or Discover card logo. Discover Card is working a debit card. Merchants must not ask for ID, not have surcharge, not have a minimum or maximum**** limit.

**Pin transaction*** merchants can have surcharges*****, ask for ID, and have a minimum or maximum**** limit. As long as it does not go through the Visa Interlink network or Maestro network.

***A few banks charge a pin purchase fee, most do not. Check with your bank to see if your does. Also, a few merchants charge a pin transaction fee but most do not.

****Maximum limit is subject to your banks daily authorization limit

*****A few state ban surcharge on debit cards no matter how the card is run through.
