I started using Quicken a year and a half ago when I was in pretty bad credit card debt (40k+). I must say that it has had more of a financial impact on my life than any other method. A bit of a reality check. I categorized everything to understand how much of my money was going where and realized how much money was being wasted at gas stations, the bar and eating out and other places. Good news today is that with a lot of work my cc debt is 0 (in addition to paying for a wedding and buying a house) and I am looking very much forward to moving the other direction. This is the first time in a long time that I feel I have everything under control. I will never put myself in that position again. So for those who don't have it is worth a try.. the basic version is reasonably priced. Woot!

Ditto! It's a real revelation when you see exactly where you spend money each month and over time. Plus, it's wonderful having the record of certain expenditures available at with a few keystrokes.

Never used it. I heavily modified Nyfans excel spreadsheet and that it what I used. I just signed up for quiken online so I will see how it works. I do good now with the spreadsheet so i am not to sure if I really need quiken.

Sweet, I'm glad you like it and have no problem with you modding as needed. I made it so what people not good with excel can use it but provided the password so that people with knowledge of excel can mod as needed. I only ask that you don't distribute your modded version as it was built form my original sheet. I hope you understand as I put a lot of work into that sheet.

I've used quicken in the past but prefer MS Money.

FYI - I am working on a new sheet, hope to have it out in the next couple of months. Will add some features and will be even easier to use.

I also use it.. Luv it. Problem is most banks won't support direct download from quicken itself

You can download qfx files from many banks and financial companies' websites. These can be easily imported into Quicken. But, some banks still use qif files which can only be imported into cash-account in Quicken.

I use Microsoft Money. Fortunately most of my bank and CC companies auto update. I only have to do a few DL's.

I really like that mine and DW's retirement 401(k) plans auto update. I can see in real time how much we are losing day to day. :blush2:

I use Quicken, and would love to say I love it, but have some issues with it-

My checking and savings account balances are always off, always, even though BOA has direct download...why is that???

My 401K cannot be automatically downloaded, so that's a bunch of work every quarter (not that that's Quicken's fault, but still).

Having said that, I could put more time into learning how to use it well- I agree that it's a great tool for keeping track of where the money is going...

Pending transactions possibly?

I recently got Quickbooks and have been meaning to start using it to track business expenses, it looks pretty cool. I don't use Quicken, but it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to start.

You can also use Quicken Home & Business for both business and personal if you don't need all the functionality of a full blown accounting software.

If you search around on the web for coupons or rebates for quicken/money you can get it for around $20 or less. Makes it easier to do taxes.

Been using Quicken since DOS days.

And that's NOT 2.

:(

I recall DOS. I first learned to program on a DOS machine. I also recall using 5 1/4" floppies to boot those machines. I have never used nor seen the 8" floppies though.

I wish they had an ODBC driver for Quicken files.

GOOGLE Results:

Results 1 - 10 of about 33,700 for odbc driver quicken

I use KMyMoney which is basically 99% of the features of MSMoney but it runs on Linux.

Linux and KMyMoney are free software. Cost: $0

This is a screen shot of an older version... 0.9 is coming out and it's got a lot more features like better online banking. I'm using a pre-release version of it and it's been really good to me. I can still balance all my accounts with it faster than Mint.com

I've used both MS-Money for about 3 years and just switched to Quicken this year. IMHO Quicken has a much better user interface, it's categories are easier to setup and maintain, downloading from financial institutions also seems more intuitive.

I am quickly find that to be the case. Every drive I have looked at is for Quick books.

I really like Quicken for tracking my personal finances but I use Quickbooks for my business.

How do you get a copy of nyfan excel spreadsheet?

It's pinned up top.

yeah, i'd love to be able to write queries against the db, quicken doesn't have all of the features in it's reporting that I would like.

I sent you a PM about it. I would never share it as there are WAY to many errors in it. Let me know ok!
