Reported to Chex over account which was never opened/used

I opened an out of state account 3 years ago, sent paperwork in but I
never recieved debit cards or checks or anything. I made nothing of it
and ended up leaving the country for a couple of years. I come back and
am told I cant open a bank account because I dont pass chex systems. I
also see a $500 collections notice stemming from this bank!! I guess
they simply charged me fees and since I never deposited because they
never sent me anything!!!....they sent me to collections! Do I have any
recourse or is it a case of I shouldve known? I live in Nevada and the bank was Suntrust if it makes any difference.

If you were not receiving anything then you may have some recourse against the bank.

First steps:

 

1. Dispute with Chexsystems. If they don't remove in 30 days -

2. Dispute directly with the bank. FCRA allows you to ask the bank to investigate the inaccurate reporting if a bureau dispute does not remove the info.

The bank must respond in 30 days.

 

Get any commitments from the bank in writing, if possible.
