About 15 days back I got a letter from a CA (Capio Partners) in regard to a medical bill from Jan 2012. Letter mentioned that CC sold the debt to CA and they are collecting on it. To dispute within 30 days (by June 2nd) by writing or pay immediately.

As far as I remembered, I had paid the bill in Jun 2012 against a statement generated by CC that had these medical visits (now mentioned as unpaid by CA) listed on them along with other visits.

I researched all my interactions with CC after getting the letter from CA and here is the order of events that has happened.

  • Jan 2012 - Doctors Visits at CC
  • March 2012 - Hospitalization
  • April 2012 - Received a statement for Jan 2012 balance
  • June 2012 - Paid balance in full (asked to apply it to april statement)
  • July 2012 - CC Selectively applies payments to Bills from March Hospitalization and not to services mentioned in April statement. They also refund me some amount as statement credit without applying that to Jan 2012 balances. Their policy mentioned in statements is that payments always will be applied to older balances. Hospitalization charges weren't submitted to insurance yet so I wasn't yet ready to pay them. I don't catch this they complicate bills and make it a science.
  • May 2013 Get a letter from collection agency for less than $500 for Jan 2012 vists.
  • May 2013 - I talk to managers at CC they refuse to accept payment or their mistake. They tell me only way now is to talk to CA and pay through them. They say they have a contract with CA to not ding Credit reports. They did accept that they overcharged me $150 when they diverted
  • May 2013 - Following the advice on this link I sent CC certified mail and the letter on this link customizing it with my story and requesting 2 things -
    • 1) Accept the money order payment for balance due I got from CA accompanying the letter.
    • 2) Requesting refund of $150 that they overcharged me for hospital vists.

Im unsure whether they will accept since they sold the account to CA but want to get ready for next steps.

WhyChat Thanks! I will take a look at the links you supplied here in your last response and act of them later this evening. The page comes up as restricted on my work computer.

TIA for helping!
