In advance I would like to thank you for your time. I am currently under contract with a company based out of Florida called Legal Helpers Debt resolution. I knew in the beginning there would be fees and just wanted to get out of debt without claiming bankruptcy. They also promised me low settlements and the annoying phone calls to stop ( which they have ). Now that I am at the end of my contract ( 8 months away ) I have a law suit on my hands with Discover bank. I am worried that LHDR with turn their backs on me. They haven't really been too helpful with this legal matter. Do you have any personal experience with Legal Helpers? Also I am at a point where I am considering legal counsel myself.

Discover does not accept any kind of debt settlement or credit counseling. Your company should have told you this from the start, so you could work out a plan directly with Discover.

I would contact Discover, or their lawyer, explain what happened, and ask them to work out a payoff plan that you can live with. Tell them you were not informed that they would not work with your debt settlement company.

The one exception to this could be if the debt is beyond that statute of limitations in your state; however, knowing Discover, they are pretty quick on the draw.

What state are you in? You can look up the SOL here http://whychat.5u.com/ just scroll down til you see it, and look up your state. Credit cards are open accounts in most states.

I am from Massachusetts. I am going to try to work something out with Discovers counsel then. I have been told now that Discover has went an hired attorneys that they would be going after me for those fees as well. I really hope they budge a little as we haven't hit the date for the pre trial which is in 3 months. Thank you very much for your input.

Explain to them that you were misled, and perhaps they will not put a judgment on your records. Good luck. Let us know what happens.

Do file a complaint with your state's Attorney General about this when you can. Perhaps you can stop this from happening to others.

I called my account manager for my DMP and asked if Discover would budge for them? He explained to me now that this attorneys office is involved they wouldn't take a settlement for less than 80%. He hung up and spoke to them and called me right back with the same answer. They said they would settle for 80% even in 9 payments or a lump sum. I am undecided if I should now myself call the attorneys to see if I could get a better deal. My fear is going to trial ( which I know I will lose ) and getting a judgment on my records.  I think I can swing the settlement in one lump sum. On an added note I have asked around and this law firm Zwicker and associates are not the best to work with as far a settlement. I will def keep you posted on the outcome. Any other thoughts on this matter will be appreciated.

Just for an update.Legal helpers helped me to get an 80% settlement and the suit dropped. I am glad they have followed through. They also are helping me get this off my credit report. But once again I did pay all my fees upfront and it was risky.

The OP hasn't been here in 2 years. Perhaps someone else will know. Also, these companies are often licensed is one state and not another.

Hi All,

I am new to these boards, but looks like I would fit right in. I find that time pressures (due to my

schedule) are adding to the stress of my debt situation -- and for this reason I'm thinking of hiring, at

least for now, Lexington Law, a credit repair agency I used briefly a few years ago. I did see some

changes on my credit report but I was unimpressed with one of the letters I saw (under my name) ,

which looked like it

was written by a first-grader! That's when I terminated the relationship. I have no doubt

that taking this on myself would be most gratifying -- but realistically, cannot see how I will get this

done. I also see that PsychDoc consults to the firm - so I'm thinking that they may have

improved by now -- it was several years ago that I worked with them.

Wondering if anyone out there has more recent experience with Lexington Law -- and

if there are any related words of advice. Many thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestions.

Re: Legal Helpers

Searching on the web, looks like Legal Helpers is still out there -- with individual reps in many states. They describe themselves as a

Debt Resolution firm. Their website is easily accessed. All info is there.

Hiring a debt resolution firm is only appropriate under certain circumstances. There are so many variables, and many different solutions, depending on you state, the details of the debt, when you stopped paying, and whether you have any resources to use to settle. I'd suggest a new thread in the main credit forum, and get a better idea of where you actually stand and what your realistic options are.
