My problem:

I let a friend of a friend who was visiting from out-of-the-country stay in my house. My guest (unknown to me until after she left) left me with a phone bill of $3,500 from making international calls. I called the phone company and explained my situation to the representative and she said that if i sign up for a long distance plan, they will go back and prorate the bill. Two weeks later, my phone was disconnected. I called the phone company and after so many "Sorry! But you have to pay the bill!" I was finally able to speak with a manager who reconnected the phone and promised to prorate the bill. I just got a letter today saying my account cannot be prorated.

I don't know what to do and can't afford to pay this phone bill, i just got a job (after a long search) and I am still trying to catch up to my other bills. I have been managing to just stay above water. This will probably set me back years. Any suggestions on how to handle the situation, or what other options I may have. The phone company does not have my SSN and i was wondering if they can report this on my credit.

Thanks in advance.

this can be reported on your credit reports w/o your ssn

my only suggestion would be to write them a letter requesting an explanation as to why they were unable to prorate the bill after they said that they could and cc it to your AG and their AG as well as write a detailed description of events with dates/ and representatives you've spoken to..or include it in the body of the letter

you may get some traction this way

Unfortunately I did not record the initial representative's name. I will try to see if one of the reps I speak to now can provide some of that information.

PS. What is an 'AG'?

Some friend! Get him/her to pay for it.

Guess you missed that part. It was a friend-of-a-friend from out-of-the-country. She bailed prior to phone bill closing; I tried calling a number of times and both of them are now MIA. Was finally able to get in touch with the friend-of-a-friend and she essentially shrugged over the phone. And said that she was sorry. She is out-of-the-country and difficult to contact.

About 10 years ago, someone made $350 in international calls and somehow got them billed to my home phone which was with BellSouth at the time. It took me 6 months of going around and around with BellSouth before those charges were removed from my account.

I can only imagine what will happen for a dollar amount 10 times greater for calls that would likely be considered authorized.

Good luck with this one.
