I have a debt from the 2001 school year.... I withdrew from my classes, but apparently not in time for a 100% refund... i received financial aid for that semester, so they pulled back the aid, leaving me to owe them the difference

fast forward to 2010, I needed to get a transcript from this school, they wont release it because of this debt and told me i need to contact the attorney general

I contact the attorney general, this account is no longer in the office, and told me the "attorney" it was transfered to.

long story short.. is this debt still collectable? do debts to a state/public school fall under any sort of statue of limitations?

I really need this transcript eventhough all the classes were withdrawn from...

Debts to state schools, and if it's with the State Attorney General's office......it was a state school, generally never go away.

Did you talk to the Registrar?

If the transcript is for a job, some schools will make an allowance to give you 1 transcript in order to get the job and pay them back.

Just curious nosey, what good is a transcript if you withdrew from all of the classes?

There is no SOL on public school debts. Have they not been offsetting your state income tax return?

not all transcript requests are for employment purposes...some programs want a transcript from EVERY institution you ever registered for regardless of whether you received credit. And if you don't offer it up and they discover you attended an additional school, you are apt to be bounced from the program.

Schools are NOT going to make allowances for a job. Too many students lie as to the purposes of the transcripts...thats why none are given out with a balance due.

I worked for a large university with 40,000 students who made such allowances for a job. You needed to bring in proof that you were being considered by an employer that requested your college transcript. The Registrar lifted the hold to allow for such a request.

The Registrar believed that by allowing a student to be gainfully employed, you were more likely to repay a past balance.

more likely is they were taking the steps to bolster a lagging number of alumni who secured employment post-graduation.

Yes, some schools ARE more concerned with numbers than balances...
